about the venue: R&R Tavern

Have to say I am not a huge fan of R&R. I find it too dark and sad looking. It feels very dingy in the ground floor bar, with no light except for a few lamps positioned here and there. Having said that, the drinks are good here and the food is pretty good to, if you are prepared to wait a while.

A note to the ladies: I think this bar is best left to the men. They seem to like it. My husband loves it.

about the venue: Daluva

I like the decor here (except for those horrid tacky photos on the walls), and it feels nice and cozy. I went with some friends who had children and really appreciated the kiddy friendly facilities. It wasnt cheap, but I didn't expect it to be, and the quality of food and drinks was overall very good. This place is nice. I would certainly come back again.

about the event: Noi Zee presents "365"

Got there just before 12, paid my money, got my drink, then got ushered out by the police. Pathetic. Paid 100thou for nothing. I, however, was lucky; the place was like a sauna, apparently some bikes were confiscated, and there were a few fights out the front, too. I suppose its to be expected with a whole bunch of unmanaged drunks dumped on the sidewalk. Having just arrived I got outside quite quickly and got away, so I was alright. Lucky me.

Maybe Noizee should think about managing and planning their parties a little better. Piano Bar was ok, but this was rubbish. I don't think I will be back to another one.

about the venue: Cherie Hearts International Early Childhood Education Centre

My niece is looking for a place for her son when they get here in August, and after a friend told me about Cherie Hearts I didn't believe her, so I called them to confirm what she said. This place is seriously freaky. Apparently they take their kids temperatures twice a day to make sure they are "well". Teachers are expected to help shower the children as this "creates a bond between child and teacher". Their floors are all tiled, and the babies are expected to make it down the stairs to eat three times a day!

I think these Singaporeans have got some pretty weird attitudes to child development, and especially illness. Too strange for me, thanks...

about the venue: Noc Bar - La Scala

It's all about the view here. A big open area, nice to sit in with friends over a few well chosen icy beverages.

The area itself on the inside is OK, but the spiders floating around the windows and near the bar don't like visitors. Drinks are average, service average, food have had here twice and it was average...

but its the view! Great view! Come just for that!

  • Does anyone know a good tailor/dressmaker for those of us who are a bit bigger than your average vietnamese girl? I know there are heaps of tailors around, but finding one who is good with "fat chicks clothes" has always proved difficult for me. I am hoping to find one who is reasonably priced. Thank you everyone!

Try Uniworld or Kinderworld. They have ads here on New Hanoian, and they just put out a full page ad in the Vietnam News saying they will basically take anybody who can string a sentence together. If you have experience teaching, you are probably more qualified than half the staff they have there already!

Other than that, try Cleverlearn. They take anyone who speaks good English. The certificate seems to be a secondary requirement.

    Good luck!

There's one overly priced tiny western supermarket there, and one restaurant, with a fancy westernised menu and inflated prices for their average tasting fare. The streets are empty, except for those giant horses towering down over you. It kind of feels like a giant rain cloud is about to open over the place. Really, its a huge ghetto for rich people.

Still, its full of happy white (and now not so white, but very wealthy) faces, and that's what makes it so appealing to some. Ciputra is great if you have money and really don't like all those dirty poor people ruining your view.

Hey, if you like it, go for it. If you have the money to live there, I am sure you have the money to pay the maid to do the shopping for you anyway.

In response to the question: Is anyone currently living in Ciputra villa (not apartment). Im just wondering how is the house condition, maintenance service, surrounding space and ...

Hi Cindy. As an expat you will pay more for housing here than the Vietnamese. Unfortunately that's just the way it is, but at least in Ba Dinh you will have cheaper prices (usually) than somewhere closer or in the Old Quarter. We live in a lovely 3 bedroom house not far from the Australian Embassy which we pay $700 a month. It is fully furnished, and has a lot of light, plus a nice outdoors area for entertaining. I know of friends who pay more and less for something similar, but I think it depends on where and when you get your properties to choose from. Over the years I have found that the more you pay, the more little features you get, but that's just my observation. Good luck!

In response to the question: Hi, how much would the average price for a Vietnamese-style house or apartment in Ba Dinh be? Would $700 a month be a reasonable budget?...

I love Hanoi! What more can I say!

Props
