Wow, so this is the famous Hanh hotel. After hearing a friend complain about outrageous landlord and the strange tactics used to extract extra money from guests, I had to have a look. To think, I almost gave up my flat and moved there. Thanks all for the heads-up!!
To the owner: Why mess up a good thing? This new information about your business is speading faster than STDs in Thailand.

Steve's right. A rundown dump. The Vietnamese staff are very low paid! The Vietnamese teachers are on 25,000vnd/hr So expect resentment when you walk in the door. Spoilt foreigners!!!

Hi all!
I'm moving back to Hanoi after being away for almost one year. Just a quick question for anyone who can help. What are the rental prices like in Hanoi these days? When i was in Hanoi last year it was quite easy to find a decent place (small unit) for about $300USD/mth. Now, with all this talk of inflation and the cost of rising real-estate, is this still the case in Hanoi? I have been in HCMC and real-estate has gone through the roof! I'm hoping Hanoi hasn't followed suit!
I have look at the Hahn long-term guest house and their rooms, although do seem lovely, are $600mth!!! Is this a rough estimate of what someone will pay now!? Ps: If you know of any reliable agents or land lords that would be also be helpful! Thanks you for reading!
PS: looking forward to getting back to Hanoi!!
Does anyone one know a good place to buy those plain but effective bamboo mats you see everywhere by west lake where you go to eat lau? If so what's a good price to pay for one? The boards on the floor in my flat are scratched quite badly, so I need something cheap to cover them. Any help would be great!!!!
Thanks in advance!
Just a quick one- Does anyone know if turning off the hot water switch at night is actually worth doing in order to save on electricity? I'm on the "business rate" of 2200/kw, so I'm trying to keep my bills down. Especially with the aircon soon to be in action! Any advice would be great! Thanks

Hey steph, I used to rent a mio in Saigon and it was great. It's a smallish auto, but still packs a bit of power. Me and my girlfriend even rode it to mui ne( 9HRS!!)
During the 6 months I rented it, I never had a problem. I am an average sized guy and i didn't feel to big for it. I say...go for it
Ps: thanks for your reply to an earlier post. I am settled in a nice place in town.
cheers, chris

Steve, I guess I am that "riff-raff" you talk about, along with most of the teacher who work here. I have worked in this country for two years with out a work permit(due to not having a degree), and take my job very seriously. Simple fact is, in Hanoi the need for teachers is so high, if all the teacher who don't have work permits were told to leave, half the schools in this country would close. This includes ACET, ILA, APOLLO, CLEVERLEARN ETC. If you have desire to teach in a country like this, a business visa will be fine as the Vietnamese legal system isn't exactly up to scratch, and the Englsih schools know how "deal" the authorities.
In response to the question: Someone today told me that there are brand new work permit rules, which makes working permit almost impossible to obtain and the same with business vi...

Yeah, Hanoi's not exactly the place you come for good sleep. I know where you're coming from. Rosters at 4am, bike horns at 5am and people at 6! If you want to stay away from the hard stuff like Diazepam and Stilnox, try a herbal pill they have here called Rotundine. It's ok, not great, but does the job. It's the only herbal sleeping pill I know that actually has any effects. Other than that you could ask for one of the old school antihistamines such as Atarax or Doxylamine. They're the most common over the counter sleeping pills in the west. Go to a larger chemist and write these on a piece of paper. Big problem is they make you feel really tired the next day and all you want to do is sleep.
Good-luck with it all.
In response to the question: Can any one recommend good sleeping pills (that I can get without a prescription but strong..) and a good pharmacy to get them from? I thought I coul...

Yes it's the law. But this is Vietnam. What is law? If you are a foreign couple there shouldn't be an issue. If you are a foreigner with a local there could be problems. There are a few ways to get around them. One, just say you're friends. Two, if you're a man with a Vietnamese G/F, you can register her as a worker for the residence. I know this sounds terrible, but it actually gets the police of your back and is 100% legal. If you're female with a Vietnamese boyfriend, you can pretend you're just friends sharing a house. Both these situations can done in a small house or flat. Personally I wouldn't want to tell the police my girlfriend's my maid. But sometimes you have to play that annoying game that is "living in Vietnam".
good luck!

Yeah GC bar is your best bet to meet someone nice. Be VERY careful of those "dudes" that hang around Hoan Kien lake. Basically they're scam artists looking for the next sucker. Or so some of my friends have told me. As the previous poster said, head to Bao Khanh street.
This site might help you out also.

Hey suwing, if you're in HCMC go to Chi's cafe. Hanoi, Flaminco Travel. Come on a tourist visa and update it to a business visa when you're here.
$90 in HCMC
$120 in Ha Noi
Most people don't bother getting a work permit. If everything was legal in this country, the boys in green wouldn't have their "extra income". Just the way they like it.

The same thing happened to me. My rent jumped up $40usd due to the change in currency ( or being charged at the black market rate ). That was last month. This month it's going to be even higher! My salary is paid in VND according to the official rate the bank releases on the day. So who is getting screwed mnguyen?
So yes, I feel your frustration Steph.
Ps: Thanks for the info Stosskraft.
