Viet Chay Thang Long is one of the newer vegetarian restaurants (although it has been around since VESAK day) which are slowly opening up around Ha Noi.
Walk over a small kitsch bridge into the restaurant and you will be welcomed with the typical Buddhist greeting. There are a few tables in the front but the main dining area is on two levels at the back.
The menu (also in English) offers a wide selection of typical Vietnamese specialties, all with mock meat: Salads, spring rolls, soups, Lau, chicken, beef, seafood, fish... everything for the true vegetarian and other mock meat fans. The food is presented nicely and it is delicious. I especially like the "chicken legs" with lemongrass or the "chicken" roasted with chilli and lemongrass. They also serve many different kinds of tea. The staff is friendly but do not speak too much English. At lunchtime it can get full and sometimes orders take a bit longer.
On the first and 15th of the lunar month, Viet Chay offers a vegetarian buffet both at lunch and at dinner time (85.000 VND). I would recommend going on other days though as the food is not as good as it normally is and it also gets quite crowded and hectic.
A truly welcomed addition to the small vegetarian restaurant scene in Ha Noi!

Yes, the Chocolate Buffet is a fun way to spend your afternoon, I agree with 4inhanoi!
It is absolutely delicious and the variety of chocolate is overwhelming.
There is also a chocolate fondue where you can dip some healthy fruit into a fountain of chocolate...!
Yes, they could throw in a drink for that price but as part of the buffet you can get hot chocolate which is, need I say it, delicious and of high quality. Choose your favourite Valrhona chocolate and they will melt it for you on a little stove. Also, I have asked for and received normal table water which was brought at no extra price (no Evian of course...).
Truly a special treat for chocolate lovers!

"All you chocoholics. We are open" - being a chocoholic, I was lured inside by the sign outside the Love Chocolate Cafe. I was not disappointed.
The menue offers different chocolate delights such as brownies, cakes, cookies and pudding as well as different coffees, ice chocolate and other drinkes. The cakes are home made, baked by the owner, a chocoholic herself. My chocolate cake with cream cheese icing was delicious and truly chocolatey!
Yes, the decor is quite frilly and flowery and may not be the latest style but it is a change from the pseudo style of Highlands Coffee and the like. And if I can get good cake there, I will happily blend out the rest.
Love Chocolate Cafe is not cheap but offers good quality for your money. I will be back to eat my way through all those chocolate delights.

Why use Lux, Palmolive or Lifebuoy if you can do better?
I have bought several of Indochine Natural soaps, for myself and as presents. The unanimous reaction was and is: Wow! Very beautiful packaging (make good presents), delicious scents,a sensual feel as well as being organic and environmentally friendly. Not easy to find here in Vietnam. The soaps clean your skin well and thoroughly from the Ha Noi dirt, leaving you feel refreshed and invigorated. I particulary like the small facial exfoliating kit with the adorable little loofah.
Now I am waiting for Indochine Natural to introduce other products - shampoo, shower gel etc. - so that I do not have to rely on bringing organic products back from Europe.
A great way to contribute to Vietnam's environmental, organic and fair trade development as well as treating your skin with what it deserves.
NB I am not, in any way, related to or friends with anybody at Indochine Natural. I just like their products.

Maison des Arts is a refuge from the many tourist galleries around the Old Quarter. Located in a beautiful five-storey house on Van Mieu, you can view and savour traditional and contemporary art. The centre also organizes cultural events such as traditional music and singing. On the fifth floor is a quiet and small cafe terrace with a limited drinks menu but a nice view of Van Mieu and the Temple of Literature. Maison des Arts also offers massages and I enjoyed a relaxing and luscious chocoate massage (25 US$, not on the cheap side but a nice treat and gift). All in all, an interesting and inspiring place.

The dentist belonging to the Family Medical Practice (Van Phuc, Kim Ma) is another option. The practice is very modern and up-to-date (international standard). But I found that they tried to "sell" me things that were not necessary, e.g. X-ray and even an operation. A second dentist I visited later told me the operation was by no means necessary.
In response to the question: I need a dentist. One of my front teeth is a crown and came loose when eating and I swallowed it so now I have a gap. Need a recommendation for a denti...

You can get fake knapsacks, bags and even some clothes (Ask around for the clothes and they will be brought out from the back of some shops ) at the shops on the North side of Hoan Kiem lake. Quality? Mostly poor.
At Tolja (aka the Russian Shop), on the ground floor of Ha Noi Towers, around the corner of the supermarket, you can get supposedly real clothes, boots and some backpacks (Northface, Wolfskin etc) which are seconds and have some flaw. It is a hit and miss what you will find so it pays to go back and check their new stuff.
In response to the question: Does anybody know where I can find outdoor equipment such as: camping gear and stuff along that line? THANKS!...

I fully agree. Use bottled water. According to a survey by the German Embassy last year water in Ha Noi is contaminated by heavy metals. Their recommendation was to only use bottled water to decrease long term effects of heavy metals.

I have never heard of "Ubest" but I know that you can get Northface stuff (and lots of other brands) at "Tolja" located on the ground floor of Ha Noi Towers, around the corner from the supermarket. It is a bit of hit and miss though in the shop. It pays to go back regularly as they have new stuff coming in all the time. Also, if they dont have what you are looking for or the correct size or colour, ask them to go and look in their storage. I have bought a Northface jacket there before.
In response to the question: Does anyone know where you can buy northface hiking clothes/gear from and/or where 'Ubest' moved too? I know 'Ubest' was near Juan Kiem and had brande...

I am pretty sure that you can buy sunscreen at supermarkets like Citimart in Ha Noi Towers, L's Place or Western Canned Food Shop. I have bought Nivea sunscreen with high UV protection myself but have forgotten where.
In response to the question: I'm sorry if this has been asked, but I have searched for answers and can't seem to find any. Where can I find a decent sunscreen/sun cream? I bou...

Mike,
Your products are really good and I enjoy using them. And so does my skin!
I used to turn up at your place to buy soaps, shampoo and the body wash but now that you have left Ha Noi I was wondering how to get hold of them. Module and the Spa belonging to Maison des Arts only sell the soaps.
So, please do look into extending the availability of all your products in Ha Noi (not just the soaps!). Like Atomic, I think that there are people here who would really appreciate being able to buy natural and organic products.
Thanks!
In response to the question: Does anyone know where I can get natural/organic skin care and/or hair care products? I hate using products with chemicals, and need to continue wi...

Another option may be the new road around West Lake (on the East side). I do not know how long it is but it is beautiful and there is not much traffic - yet! On one side you have the lake, on the other at times, big hoa sen ponds. I have seen a few other people running there. It starts off Dang Thi Mai.
In response to the question: I am curious if anyone knows of some great, longer (6k-15k) running routes in and around Hanoi. I have been running in Lenin Park, but I would love a ...

I think L's Place on Xuan Dieu sells a few gluten free products.
In response to the question: Where can I buy gluten free bread and pasta? Is it even possible in Hanoi?...
