about the venue: Viet Chay Thang Long

no photo available

Viet Chay Thang Long is one of the newer vegetarian restaurants (although it has been around since VESAK day) which are slowly opening up around Ha Noi.
Walk over a small kitsch bridge into the restaurant and you will be welcomed with the typical Buddhist greeting. There are a few tables in the front but the main dining area is on two levels at the back.
The menu (also in English) offers a wide selection of typical Vietnamese specialties, all with mock meat: Salads, spring rolls, soups, Lau, chicken, beef, seafood, fish... everything for the true vegetarian and other mock meat fans. The food is presented nicely and it is delicious. I especially like the "chicken legs" with lemongrass or the "chicken" roasted with chilli and lemongrass. They also serve many different kinds of tea. The staff is friendly but do not speak too much English. At lunchtime it can get full and sometimes orders take a bit longer.
On the first and 15th of the lunar month, Viet Chay offers a vegetarian buffet both at lunch and at dinner time (85.000 VND). I would recommend going on other days though as the food is not as good as it normally is and it also gets quite crowded and hectic.
A truly welcomed addition to the small vegetarian restaurant scene in Ha Noi!

about the venue: Le Club Bar

Yes, the Chocolate Buffet is a fun way to spend your afternoon, I agree with 4inhanoi!

It is absolutely delicious and the variety of chocolate is overwhelming.
There is also a chocolate fondue where you can dip some healthy fruit into a fountain of chocolate...!

Yes, they could throw in a drink for that price but as part of the buffet you can get hot chocolate which is, need I say it, delicious and of high quality. Choose your favourite Valrhona chocolate and they will melt it for you on a little stove. Also, I have asked for and received normal table water which was brought at no extra price (no Evian of course...).

Truly a special treat for chocolate lovers!

about the venue: Love Chocolate Cafe

no photo available

"All you chocoholics. We are open" - being a chocoholic, I was lured inside by the sign outside the Love Chocolate Cafe. I was not disappointed.

The menue offers different chocolate delights such as brownies, cakes, cookies and pudding as well as different coffees, ice chocolate and other drinkes. The cakes are home made, baked by the owner, a chocoholic herself. My chocolate cake with cream cheese icing was delicious and truly chocolatey!

Yes, the decor is quite frilly and flowery and may not be the latest style but it is a change from the pseudo style of Highlands Coffee and the like. And if I can get good cake there, I will happily blend out the rest.

Love Chocolate Cafe is not cheap but offers good quality for your money. I will be back to eat my way through all those chocolate delights.

about the venue: Indochine Natural Co. Ltd.

Why use Lux, Palmolive or Lifebuoy if you can do better?
I have bought several of Indochine Natural soaps, for myself and as presents. The unanimous reaction was and is: Wow! Very beautiful packaging (make good presents), delicious scents,a sensual feel as well as being organic and environmentally friendly. Not easy to find here in Vietnam. The soaps clean your skin well and thoroughly from the Ha Noi dirt, leaving you feel refreshed and invigorated. I particulary like the small facial exfoliating kit with the adorable little loofah.
Now I am waiting for Indochine Natural to introduce other products - shampoo, shower gel etc. - so that I do not have to rely on bringing organic products back from Europe.
A great way to contribute to Vietnam's environmental, organic and fair trade development as well as treating your skin with what it deserves.

NB I am not, in any way, related to or friends with anybody at Indochine Natural. I just like their products.

about the venue: Maison Des Arts

no photo available

Maison des Arts is a refuge from the many tourist galleries around the Old Quarter. Located in a beautiful five-storey house on Van Mieu, you can view and savour traditional and contemporary art. The centre also organizes cultural events such as traditional music and singing. On the fifth floor is a quiet and small cafe terrace with a limited drinks menu but a nice view of Van Mieu and the Temple of Literature. Maison des Arts also offers massages and I enjoyed a relaxing and luscious chocoate massage (25 US$, not on the cheap side but a nice treat and gift). All in all, an interesting and inspiring place.
