about the venue: Bún Chả 59 Hàng Mã

The Union Flag

No, I hardly ever give a five.

I thought the sauce was a bit strong - I'm a bún chả connoisseur, don't you know?

Still, the salad and herbs were fresh, and the little pork burgers were wrapped in the most fragrant leafy cummerbunds I've tasted, and the thịt miếng was quite good, too.

When I come back here I'm coming for the nem cua. If, like me, you've ever wondered "where's the crab?" while eating the famous nem cua bể of other Hanoi bun joints, then I think the answer is "59 Hang Ma."

These nem actually taste of crab, and they're glorious, not to be missed.

I had trouble finding this place, because it lacked the customary flag of billowing plumes of smoke from the grilled meat: where's the Minsk?

I asked the proprietor and she explained that bun cha smoke was now cấm in Hoàn Kiếm, so they had to cook it out on Thụy Khuê.

about the venue: Phở Bò Gia Truyên 49 Bát Đàn

The Union Flag

Truly excellent phở bò, and an atmosphere to complement it.

Not open during the day, just during the evening and morning, trying to get served here reminded me strongly of the Seinfeld "soup nazi" sketch. There's a definite right and wrong way to give your order and receive your soup.

Like the new york soupery that inspired Seinfeld this place is very special, and other hanoi-style phở shops should measure themselves against it.

about the venue: Cơm Niêu Mình An

The Union Flag

I had been meaning to eat here for approximately 3 years, in a passing kind of on-the-way-to-the-supermarket way, and since a construction crew was tearing up my kitchen floor we decided to traipse down busy Pham Ngoc Thach to here one evening.

Out front is a glass case filled with sample dishes, more familiar from Com Binh Dan shops, but once you get into the air-conditioned restaurant you're struck with the cleanliness of the place - it could almost be Saigon...

We ordered enough food for twice our number, and sampled many dishes. Among them the sweet and sour ribs were outstanding, the boiled fish was good, and the grilled pigeons were tasty.

The feature here, and the thing that had made me curious all these years, is the clay pot rice. It's exactly what it says: rice cooked in a small clay pot. And it's very tasty, definitely one up on your teflon pot steamed rice.

The bill came to about 350,000 for 4 people, which is a lot for com binh dan, but then we couldn't eat all of it - eyes-bigger-than-belly syndrome.

The service was really good - I think a lot of the higher-end places could learn from it. They had plenty of servers standing in position without hovering, and it was easy to catch someone's eye.

I'll definitely be back next time my kitchen floor's being dug up, maybe before.

about the venue: Taxi Thành Hưng

The Union Flag

Hard to give a rating to a taxi firm on just one experience, but...

I called this company to bring a van (taxi tải) to move a sofa. They came promptly, put up with all kinds of nonsense from the Ciputra security guards ("not allowed in here / need a permit to take things out / nothing may be taken out of Ciputra on Sunday") which took us past the 4pm cut off for delivery vehicles. They loaded the couch, then offered to wait for 4 hours until the curfew ended at 8pm before delivering it.

Long story short: they did all this and carted the thing from one side of the city to the other, including lugging it down an alley, for 150,000 VND. All done courteously and on time.

All a bit anecdotal I know, but string a few anecdotes together and you've got statistics.

  • I went to the Yamaha shop yesterday and they have a grand total of 3 guitar amps, all of which seem on the expensive side (the least expensive was a Peavey that they're selling for $900 - I had a pang of regret remembering that I sold my last Fender Princeton for $400).

Is the Yamaha shop the only game in town when it comes to guitar amps, or are there other choices?
