Really gorgeous interior design, tranquil and very professional staff.
It was a great experience, one of the best in Hanoi. Not too pricey at all for the service and environment you have there.

Really great place for Japanese Pancake. I was told by Japanese friends that it was their specialty.

I received a gift certificate to get a massage there, and all i have to say is that i will go back for sure.
It was very nice, clean and quiet.
The person was very attentive checking if his strength was to my liking.
I'm not a professional, but for once i got a real massage in Hanoi. And no additional "extra services" were offered to me. Which was very appreciated. Just pure relaxation.
That is why i gave a 5 stars.
If you are after a good relaxing massage, justmassage is the place to go.
Just be careful when you go there as it is hard to find.
Once you turn on Van Bao from Kim Ma, take a right on Van Phuc street, at the ned of the street take a left on the lane just before the hotel standing on the left sidewalk; then another left and here you are.

yes, i agree, usually taking Hanoi Taxi or CP taxi seem more expensive on the starting fare but actually end up most of time cheaper for me, as the small taxi like the matiz one are starting very cheap but increase extremely fast.
the good thing is too always have small change or keep small change when going out just for the taxi.
the other thing is too be more patient than they are. don't forget "time" as no value for vietnamese. So once i told the driver who was doing the "no change" trick that i did not care and that i will wait until he gets the change. after a minute he actually gave up when he saw me squatting and lighting up a cigarette.

Well Nathalie, welcome to Vietnam!
i have been here for 3 years and start to have a good experience in renting house, trust me on this one!
First and fore most, avoid as much as possible to leave a deposit. If you need to secure a house or apartment, say that you give 1 month in advance or 2 or 3 but no matter what the money you give in advance count as rent payment.
more than 95% of the people i know or talked to who gave a "deposit" had a very hard time to get it back if they got it back. the landlord will find any excuse possible and make you linger and run after him to get your money; hopping that you will give up.
As for 1 year in advance, this is crazy, the standard now in hanoi, and it's been like that for a while is 3 months or 4 when signing and payment of 3 months of rent every 3 months. A year of payment means the guy need money badly and is trying anything. I wouldn't do it unless you get a real contract with a red invoice through a proper real estate agency and that your company is paying for it. other than that, i, personally would not go there even if it means i have to find something else.
If you pay 1 year in advance, chances are you will not have any help from your landlord should something happen. At least if you need to fix something you can play the game: you fix, you get your rent.
As for the 2 contracts, one for you and one for the tax office, it is quite normal. I have actually never seen a country where people are screwing up their government so much. And you wonder why the government does not have enough money to improve health care system etc... obviously...no body pays his/her tax as they should!!!
There is no real way to bind these contract legally unless you get a red invoice that prove the monthly rent amount.
So to sum up, be careful when entering this kind of deal, because once the money is given to the landlord, there is no turning back. you have good landlords, but usually the good ones don't ask for 1 month deposit and 1 year payment in advance.
Unfortunately, if it means loosing a nice place, well some times it's better than having to face trouble later.
you can ask around, there countless stories of people getting screwed.
Maybe you can ask some one at your work to help you with that, it helps sometime to have a Vietnamese on your side during negotiation.

no offense, but maybe that's why people hired locally or working for company that does not provide house allowance; have problems renting descent places at descent prices.
In what other proper country do you pay rent 1 year in advance with a deposit on top of that?
I was gonna rent a house once asked for 800$ that could have been dealt to 650-700$, the landlord almost accepted when some one from an Embassy came up and offer 1600$ which was the maximum he was given as an allowance. Even my agent fund that price completely insane for the house.
Why on earth Embassies, NGOs or any other organizations accept such stupid condition or crazy prices?
But i still wish you god luck because as Alpha said, you have the wrong side of the bargain in this one. without looking at the profiles, i can tell Alpha has been here for a few years already and you just arrived in Hanoi, correct?

your best options are to go the western medical clinic like Hanoi Family Medical Practice or SOS (usually more expensive though).
But there is also a good, reputable and not expensive Vietnamese pharmacy around Hoan Kiem lake almost at the corner of Ba Trieu street.

Sorry to hear that. It's really not cool when this happen to you. And losing data is definitely the biggest issue here.
you are right mac are so not common here in Vietnam. I would ask a Vietnamese friend or staff to help you (unless you speak enough Vietnamese) and browse Vietnamese site selling 2nd hand stuff.
unfortunately i can't recall the site but i have seen a couple by chance once.
There is also a market somewhere in Hanoi where you can often find stolen items. Again i am sorry but i don't know the name and location but heard about it.

yes less than 4 millions.
you can find some on Giang Vo ( the streets running parallel to Kim Ma which goes from the Horizon Hotel to Lang Street).
you can find some made in China (big white square machine) that do the job but pretty noisy. But on that street there is a duty free shop where you can buy up to 6 days after you've entered vietnam. You need to bring your passport and the white paper.
In that shop they sale a "Delongui" one that are pretty good, quite silence and that can even be used as a small heater in winter.
I heard you can also find them some where else but don't know where.
But definitely a must have in Hanoi. It avoids having your leather shoes or jacket turning green!!! and your bedsheets smelling during winter time.

Yes, i've been here for 4 years and the market price is just insane at the moment.
Not my favorite choice, but for family with kids Ciputra might be the place to look.
Just be aware and careful with agents, they will say "yes...yes" to anything you ask and say, but it does not mean that its true at all.
If any repair or installation is required, make sure it's in the contract and on both contract: the fake one and the official one. Yes, 2 contracts, that's how it works most of the time!

That is a classic, it actually amazes me how they can keep on calling a number that clearly the person answering is not the one you try to reach; and whom does not speak your language on top of that.
Yes the shouting works, or some mobile phones have the "blocking number" function, or you show up at your mobile provider's office and have them block the number or call that person themselves.
I did it once cause the guy kept on calling and shouting at me, so they threaten him to cut off his line and he stopped immediately. Done deal!

i know there is a Veitnamese MUG, but they seems quite hermetic to foreigners. Probably the language barrier.
Any how, i would be happy to be part of a MUG in Hanoi. I've been using Mac for....humm...i can't even remember exactly. So sharing this interest with others would be nice.
AS for getting Apple hardware, there are the normal FPT shops but i think they are boosting their price quite nicely. i'm not even sure they are allowed by Apple to mark up that much. I know there are a lot of restriction and guideline to follow once you become authorised reseller by Apple. but T.I.V

Other wise, if you want to purchase expensive hardware, it could be worth going to Bangkok with airasia. Since we are leaving the country after the purchase you get the VAT refunded at the airport.
Just need to check if it's still worth it with the exchange rate if you use USD, and for those lucky ones with Euro, it should be definitely worth it.
So you get a nice new little toy, you can go to Pantip plaza to refuel in Mac software and enjoy Bangkok for the week-end.

i've been here for 4 years and moved a lot (yes i know...) and used different brand and panasonic was the most reliable.
And big shop are also better than the small one down the street who might desapear in 3 months.
but keep in mind that in a very dusty city like hanoi you need to have them clean at least twice a year to work efficiently.

huuuummmm.... i'd try to avoid dealing with police as much as possible. It could really get painful. They will probably try to make you come to an agreement with the landlord, then it comes to who is in better terms with them.
Unless you really want to stay in that place (which you should get out as construction work is long and they work almost 24/7 here), you should simply get out or buy earplugs.
The fake lease could play in your favor. Being crooked works both ways! but don't forget that in a way you are as faulty as the landlord since you signed that lease, therefore you were also aware of that. i know, that's the tricky part.
just be aware that going against "the system" going to the police with the fake lease to help the future tenant etc... is going up against a major wall if you ask me. Keep in mind that we are and all that it implies.

i saw a dvd player around 500 000VND on Ha Bai Trung and Ba Trieu, in that new fancy building/electronic shop.
You can't miss it as they always play very loud cheap dance music outside.
on the second floor is the TV/DVD section.
but i have to agree with alpha, i bought a simple Phillips DVD player 4 years ago and it freaked out on one DVD only so far. very satisfied with that brand. It's also a multi zone DVD which means you can play any DVD you can put your hand on.

well for having worked for a medical clinic here, you definitely don't need to have a pap smear done.
I'm not surprised coming from SOS, they are known to add unnecessary tests to build up the bill. They know it's probably your company or insurance that will pay. And they tend to put aside the physical or mental discomfort of patients to do extra test for the benefits of their income.
You can have it done at either Bac Mai or Viet Duc hospital. The speed of the process can depend on how much you pay ;) but if you prefer a western style medical care provider you should go to the French Hospital.
For now, Hanoi Family Medical Practice is not on the government list for that medical check-up: politics... politics!

The best advice people: don't hesitate to have your documents translated by a Vietnamese colleague or staff. They'll simply translate you the tests that needs to be done.

i've been using PestBuster.
they are from Singapore i think and are very professional. And they always come with an English speaker staff.
They spray stuff around the house according to what you problem you have. Their product is really efficient, i often find the cockroach dead but in front of my house, so they don't even make it inside. I mean after the hidden ones inside got cut!
And it does not harm dogs or cats. My dog is still as crazy as before spraying!
yes it might a more pricey than simple trap: around 70$ but it's good for at least 6 month as they say. it's just 12$/month.
To me it's worth it to not have all these crawling your floor.

you'll see for yourself, but honestly, driving a big/powerful bike in Hanoi is more of a pain in the #$% than anything else. You see some Vietnamese showing off there 450cc and more on the street but it's not practical at all.
But with the heavy traffic, bad road condition, tiny 2 way streets; such monster is no fun at all. My friend is a "biker" and was driving over 500cc back home, dropped the idea after seeing the traffic here. During pick hours it can easily become "rear tire to front tire" for a while.
Highways? Big no no! they are not highways as we know them, large straight roads but with many little roads coming straight in! And as you will see they love to cut off people here. The rules is i am watching the other in front, you are watching me.
So going over 100-120km/h is literally suicidal!
Make sure you bring your "real-secure" helmet and a good medical insurance!!!!!

Hum... i agree only to a certain extend.
i'm not sure if i understand correctly. But being a friend or an agent, it's you against them.
Agents are doing the same. Since 99.99% of them are working on commission by getting 1 or 2 months of rent as salary. they always try to boost up the price.
In a way you actually have a better chance with a coworker who is your staff in the company than an agent. He/she will try for sure as you'll be his/her boss in the future.
the down side? that person might not know the market as well as an agent obviously.
One advice, you often get very confident when finding an agent that speaks your language well, as you are overwhelmed by the move and language barrier. But stay on your guard. don't hesitate to ask questions here, you have people like me who's been here for years and can help you.
Golden rules: no deposit! If they want money on the signature of the lease make sure it counts as the first payment. And not a deposit as you will never see that money again. I'm pretty sure you can search this site for previous bad experience.
Also be aware that the standard is 3 months of rent at the time. more than 3 months is at your discretion but i wouldn't. Simply because that means you might not see your landlord until the next time you pay your rent!!
And you'll probably sign 2 leases: 1 for his tax declaration which will be extremely low, and the one reflecting your actually rent. It is very common here, and if you refuse you'll simply loose the house. Forget about complaining to the police: waste of time, trust me.
I hope that will help you. All i can say is: more than 4 years in Hanoi, i've learn the hard way!

My guess is that they are genuine. Unless you have a trick to check otherwise.
During my last trip back home i wondered into a Sport Expert shop while waiting for my wife, and had the idea to check the tags of major brands to see where they were manufactured.
To my surprise: "made in vietnam" was quite popular as well as "made in Lao", made in Philipines" etc... less in China though.
And i'm talking about major brands here, if i remember correctly North Face is one of them. Maybe you can have someone back home checking for you. that would confirm what i am saying below.
Thus, my guest is that, as i like to say, what you find in this shop are stuff that fell from the back of the truck ;) if you see what i mean.
I hope that my theory will help you. But keep in mind that i'm still not sure 100%.

Well for the pediatrician part, you can check the Hanoi Family Medical Practice on Kim MA. you can check their website: www.vietnammedicalpractice.com
They have a very nice and friendly pediatrician: Dr. Hellen.
they have also program for vaccination which comes cheaper than paying shot individually (though it depends what your baby already had); They are often cheaper than SOS too but their staff are really friendly.
And i agree with Ouriel: for the sake of your child DO NOT GO ON A MOTORBIKE WITH YOUR BABY like many parents do. Roads are way too dangerous.

In 90% of Hanoi the sidewalks are tiny and used to park motorbike or by various mini street shops.
but depending where you will live, there are parts of town that can accommodate a stroller.

Good point natinnam. True: if you plane of climbing K2 then you might want to head over to Thailand or somewhere where you can genuine store, just to make sure.
But like i said, there many brands that are manufacturing in Vietnam but don't have the license to sell on the Vietnamese market, it's only for exportation (we won't get into the legal stuff here). So from time to time you must, like everywhere else in the world, have items that are finding there way out the factory.
Again i would not bet my money on it. I'll head back home in september for a month. I'll have a look at "real" North Face clothes tag to see where they are made.

yes hot water tank is good to shut down during the day if possible. It does not hurt for sure.
Aircon are very power hungry, but if you don't run them much you should not have a high bill.
One of the best thing to do it is to shut down everything in your place, and i mean switch off the fuse box in your place if you can or literally unplug all appliance, TV, computer... as they still suck juice when in idle mode.
Then check if your counter still turns. it should not. You could see if you are also paying for someone else which is a classic here.
if you do it at night it will be even more obvious.
it happen to me but with the water, i was paying for the water of my landlord before.
And in the previous house i was paying for the house next door using all aircon in the house all day long; until i told EVN there was something wrong and realized they inverted the bills.
FYI: If you file a complain to EVN they have to send someone to check this. Not the best option but sends a message to the landlord.
Last recourse if you are sure someone is using your counter, a bit nasty but my friend gave me that idea: you unplug everything in your place, and create a major shortcut in your fuse box, if someone is on the same circuit, you'll blow everything is their place. And of course they won't be able to complain about this and you'll know who that is!!! nasty, no? LOL

But one thing does not make sense to me: why would you pay commercial rate. As far as i know there is commercial and residential. Event though renting house and having a building is somewhat a business: You are still living in a residential apartment or house, right?

this question deserve a blog on its own !
here is a short list:
- taxi: safe ride: Hanoi taxi, CP taxi, or big company. The meter starts maybe higher but go slower than the small ones.
- taxi: funny, these guys never have change to give you back!!! either have always small change, or just play the game, if you show you are not in a hurry and can wait for him to get change, it suddenly found some in his very deep pocket.
- utility bills: a classic one, you will pay for your landlord or some else electricity and/or water.
- expiry date in food shop: even in popular food shops in the expat community, i found really out dated can food or other items.
i'm sure there is more but that's it for now.
If someone wants to add just copy/paste the list and add yours. that could end up being a useful list for Hanoians.

Yes the steering carriage lock is not very safe, you can actually brake it easily with a good snap to it.
On the next bike i suggest to install the lock on the front wheel. This one requires more time to break.
Or the ultimate option. Get a really cheap, dirty, old Minsk. Vietnamese usually don't touch them (knock on wood!) as it's the farmer's bike and are not interested. also they can't get much money from it.

Who ever that is, some good medication such a prozac can be found in pharmacy here in Hanoi. Search TNH to locate the closest medical facility and/or pharmacy to you immediately.

I second mnguyen on that one: Asahi is more a trendy place than anything else.
If you want real japanese food, you have to go in places where the japanese community is going like Ky Y (http://newhanoian.xemzi.com/venue/show/258/Ky-Y) though the decor is not too romantic or classy, it's just a place you go for great food. there are others but i can't remember their name.
Bobby chin....well it's bobby chin. i won't come back to that one, but read all the reviews before going there. short story, if you are looking for just a nice decor, i guess you could go there.
Now for such occasion like yours, i would definitely go to La Verticale (http://newhanoian.xemzi.com/venue/show/1738/La-Verticale), the chef is the ex-chef of the Metropole here in Hanoi, and is considered one of the top chef in the world. Many people don't know it but it's true. He has been given the title of Maitre cuisinier de France which is a major recognition in the cuisine industry.
And surprisingly, is not over priced at all. The price are lower or the same as a Bobby chin for example.
You can certainly ask them for a quite table, And you can enjoy a drink on their nice terrace upstairs.

One of the major problem here is that laws are not reinforced. But one thing for sure and this come from a reliable source, foreigners pays or are supposed to pay the same rate as Vietnamese.
This law has been passed a few years ago (more than 5 years ago if i remember correctly). The same with Airline ticket with Vietnamairline, it used to be more expensive if you were foreigner, but not anymore.
So if that argument comes up, need to ask to see the proof.

best advice, do it yourself. no, really! i did it once for an external HD and it's very easy to do.
You just buy a casing that have the firewire interface/connectivity + a HD of your choice and off you go.
most shop will do it for you if you are not confident. but i assure you that in 99% case it's just a matter of a Philips crew driver and 10 minutes of your time.
If you want something good looking and that has firewire, i know the Apple shop on Kim Ma has external casings for sale that has the G5 brush metallic look.
A real geek friend of mine showed me once and the bottom line is that my external HD cost me a fraction of what you normally pay for an already made one.
And the good thing, you know you can change the HD easily and have the one you want inside.

Yes, Vietnamese registrar are much more expensive. From my experience, my understanding is that you need to be legally register and show a proof of registration of your business or NGO or what ever you are in order to get a .vn domain.
it's not like other TLD such .com, .net or .org which you can register on line in 2 minutes.
As for sites outside of Vietnam selling .vn TLDs they charge much higher as they are not on site and i guess they charge for all the time and paperwork they will have to do from abroad. And i am pretty sure the .vn domain business is taking care by the government. Don't forget, everything related to publishing information is manage by the authorities.
But one thing for sure is that for other domains than .vn don't go with local companies. they charge more for nothing, and they often don't give access to your control panel.
They basically register it as an individual and charge you much more.
I actually check ICANN registrar list and could not find FPT or others who claim to be ICANN accredited.

hum... this question has some good argumentative potential!
let's see....
one thing i would say, is that Hanoi is full of people from around the world and Vietnamese of course that don't understand words the same way due to being a non English native speaker.
I'd say that it is the first thing that usually ignite discussion here.
Also i agree to some extend with "findaway" but you can also be almost sure that "findaway" lived abroad or is in direct contact with foreigners on a daily basis, looking at the way she writes. Therefore has a different views than Vietnamese women born, raised and lived in Hanoi only.
The other undeniable fact, is that east and west are just plain and simply different.
So for the 2 to meet and feel comfortable together requires changes/compromise from both parties.
Therefore reducing the chances for it to work as frequently as in a society where everybody has more or less the same culture, mentality...
It does mean it's possible, i have friends that are very happy with their Vietnamese partners (and i mean not just western men with Vietnamese women, but the other way too).
Now i think riki should just understand where Vietnam is coming from and therefore understand that certain values are here to stay or change slowly.
And just for the record, i know a bald man who has been very happy with a Vietnamese women for quite a while, so riki: Don't give up on the hair style!

Yep, since it's still all new to Vietnam and there is not any centralize credit history company; banks don't offer credit card in the way most developed countries do.
I had the same problem with ACB and HSBC. Technically it's not a credit card as their policy of freezing the amount given as a limit defies the concept and definition of credit.
As natinnam said, the only way to my knowledge is to block money in order to have a credit card; HSBC, ANZ and other bank will provide you with that type of "credit card".

agree with alpha, it would get really messy to do it this way. And since this entire site is devoted to Hanoi, why would you condense so much information on one page only. it makes it only harder to index that info.
If spots and questions are entered properly while using tags, it becomes fairly simple to find info on the site using the search bar.
example: the last part of your "question" talks about "dentist", but yet there is only "health" as a tag. If you want to find information about dentist on a site or the web for that matter, would you search with "dentist" or "health" as a keyword?

I know it has been a while but like i said on my post above, i went back home and took 5 minutes to check cloth tags while shopping for running shoes (they never have my size here !).
Well whether being North Face or any other similar famous brand, everything is either made in Cambodia, China, Laos, Bangladesh, Philippines and ... and ... yes ... yes ... you guested it ... Vietnam.
Now, the winter jacket made to climb K2 specifically was not made in Vietnam, but i saw other cloth from that brand made here.
So it leaves us with a smaller doubt that it was not genuine.

yes, most of them are phone/dsl cable. Which still make that dangerous. I don't think having only expat complaining will make a difference as it might be seen as the for-ever-complaining expats.
But if you bring the attention to Vietnamese living around that it could arm their children, bike and make their home without electricity and/or phone and/or internet. They will probably rally to your cause.
Had similar problem with used syringe on my lane with many kids playing around.
I know how to be careful with that. I showed that to my Vietnamese neighbor who did not do much about it. But when i spoke to a Vietnamese mother explaining that her kid could catch AIDS or any other major disease; the syringes suddenly disappeared.

all i have to say is that during my almost 5 years in Hanoi i have met some of the worse and some of the best people in my life.

hey that's pretty cool.
i took one one day but i thought it was a coincidence. it found cool to see a female behind the wheel.
not because i think that female don't know how to drive but because in a quite "macho" or man driven society, it was pleasant to see women showing they can do this job as well as men. She was actually better than most taxi i took.

but usually one good trick is actually not to respond. By responding you indicate the f#$%@ spammer you do exist and that your account is active.
even if you send him an email saying to remove you from his list, he will probably remove you from that one to put you in another one. it's a never ending story.
And for those who gets spams here is one more good trick, you set up a gmail account that you use for forums, groups...and TNH. And have all the emails forwarded to your good email address.
gmail has a pretty good and solid spam filter. And when you forward all incoming emails, it does not forward the spams.
you just simply log in once in a while and check the spam box to make sure it did block good emails which you can add to the white list if it happen.

not very versed in rice lingo, but i know Phuong shop on Xuan Dieu (right by the ex-Vine Annex), has different type of rice.
Though i think some are from Japan and some from Thailand. So i can't say for sure if it's what you are looking for.

I'd say that it really depends on your shoe size.
you start to see Adidas or Nike shops around.
There is one Dien Bien Phu. And i think one also in Vincom Tower.
As to know if their genuine brand, it's another story and/or thread to start or continue here.
with my show size (10 1/2 - 11 or 43-44), i stopped looking as i simply never find shoes beside a left over from a 10 year old stock in the back of a doggy shop.
I usually wait for a trip back home or a nice long week-end in Thailand.
Though you might be able to find some in Saigon if you ever go there, as their shopping is more developed.

And i just had a living proof of that tactic.
My cousin came from abroad to travel Vietnam with her boyfriend. Even though i tried to let her know about all the possible scams i know, it takes time and to see them coming.
on her way back to Hanoi, they told all about their trip and .... and how they got tricked, scammed.
I know and i am used to see 99% of what she told me coming.
Therefore by knowing well where you live, you make it a better journey.

Especially if you or your partner works for an Embassy, NGO or a major corporation.

yes 70 000VND is way to high.
A good thing to do is always approaching the person with a big smile, and like granteralus said, take interest in what is doing (which is always good to learn anyways).
As for the nails and cutting object on the road: have you seen the states of roads in Hanoi and the amount of construction going on. It's quite normal to have so much stuff on the street that can damage tires.
And as for the repair scam, you seem to have a short memory or being completely candid. Mechanics, in most western countries are doing the exact same thing cars; it's classic. It's just that you might trust them more cause their speak your language.

Alpha, i think you pretty much have your answer here.
keep it! and i'm not saying cause i'm one. Your elite status came way after you started TNH. And it based on pure statistical numbers, therefore not arbitrary at all. Therefore it proves that members that are now elite members gave to the community in good spirit rather than trying to get free drinks during the meet up.
I don't think there is any argument to have here.
And like elite and non-elite members said before me: if you don't do anything, don't complain about anything! freeloaders should not complain at all.
Maybe you should start the "shitty member" status! to recompense members showing up at all meet up but never participate on TNH.

I can actually confirm that also: IT IS POSSIBLE.
NickinNam: I'm not sure where you got your information, but i think you should revised it or update it unless you spoke about about a specific type of business. As Rahul said, accession to WTO forced Vietnam to change some of their laws on investments and other aspects. It is a requirement in order to access WTO.
Otherwise what would be the point of being part of it (granted we can very well argue the real purpose of WTO itself being to facilitate the corporate mafia of the world to colonize financially and legally countries, but in another post).
There are still some business' that are sensitive such as publication, printing... basically everything related to media (let's not get into this, should we?), health...

I can't believe there is still posts going on that issue.
If anything, as grubby said, let's have a short explanation on the calculation method (even though i don't think it should have to be public) in the FAQ section. I don't think it should even be on the front page at all.
The point of that site is not to become an elite as it is just given objectively to thank people.
It is quite a normal practice in forums and other type of site.
As to the word used, put it this way, Hanoi having foreigners coming from so many different part of the world, words will always be interpreted in different ways (period). Even between English, American, Canadian, South African and Australian; certain words don't have the same value or impact. And the same concept applies in other languages such as French. In french saying that someone is an asshole does not have the same impact at all than it has in English. the literal translation in french is used in a friendly way. It does not have a strong and aggressive value. Insult someone with that word in French and he will probably find that funny and laugh about it, where if you do it in Engish, you might end up in a fight.
So saying that this word is emotionally charged might be one way of seeing it.
If anything, the word elite comes from the french word "élite", which comes from the word "élire", which comes from the latin word "electus" which means "chosen". It started to be used in french during the 18th century.
So to me it is not emotional charged at all. it means to me that people got elected to get that status, and as grubby said, there were elected by a mathematical equation.
then, why call this site New Hanoian, does it mean it's only reserved to people new in Hanoi, and then we need to define "new". Being here for 5 years means that i can't participate to that site anymore because i am "new" anymore???????

yep, i second Annalea, the shop on Ngoc Khanh is really good. They have a lot of everything and there is no bargaining needed. Everything is tagged and it's the same price for everybody and most of their product have a real warranty.
As to getting a modem, why? Hanoi is a huge "hotspot" on its own. You can pick up open WIFI connection everywhere !!!!!!
