Having read everyone else's reviews I thought this'd be a nice place for a nice dinner for two, and it was.
The atmosphere and decor are cosy enough for two but bright enough for groups, with some great prints on the walls - I think there was some kind of show going on.
Nice selection of wines by the glass - which the waitress's allow you to try before you buy.
Great food - My better half's potato soup was incredible, my scallops were tasty and my lamb shank was big, juicy and very tender.
four stars because...
The 'special' sesame rolled tuna was very dry, like it'd been cooked before then reheated. Very dissapointing and not at all like the quality of the rest of the food.
The service was a little too attentive for my liking, whisking my plate away while the last mouthful was just leaving my fork, but they didn't hover over my shoulder too much.
Overall, great. Well priced, well balanced and I'll definately be going back.

I'm a meat-eater, and wasn't expecting much from a vegetarian restaurant. Fortunately.
The cauliflower cheese was watery and my better half's tofu was cold and flavourless.
The puddings were tasty, but didn't make up for a surprisingly sarcastic waiter.
Nice building, nice atmosphere - but wouldn't reccomend this place to anyone on the strength of its menu.

I went here on the reccomendation of a friend on Saturday steak night and became hooked - It was so perfect I went back the following 3 Saturdays.
Unfortunately the quality of the steak+mash seemed to drop off a little after that, which has allowed me to try new restaurants.

I'm a big fan of the old propaganda posters available at the Old Propaganda POsters shop near the cathedral, but am a bit put off by their incessant, unnecessary dishonesty. They are NOT originals, and NOT worth $45.
Now if they'd sold them as prints, I'd've happily forked out for something I like, but I'm dead set against rewarding them for assuming I'm an ignorant, half blind tourist with more money than sense, which is only partly true.
Anyway, my question - does anyone know where i can buy the real thing? Genuine classic soviet era posters? Or pick up some reproductions without the exhorbitant price tag? Or even pick up some reproductions WITH the exhorbitant price tag, but without the sneering scams and bare-faced lies?
end rant.
Thanks in advance,
Dan.
Hello.
I've been renting a Wave for a while now, and think it's time to buy my own - the maths of the situation is that if I rent for 2 years I pay $1200, so i may as well buy my own bike now, and sell it on later.
I'd like to see what's available 2nd hand bike wise, but I'm too lazy to go chasing classifieds around town - are there any 2nd hand bike shops?
In my mind I'm picturing a pristine tarmacced lot, with shiny serviced 2nd hand bikes of all shapes and sizes stretching off into the distance and reasonable prices attached to each one. There's even a clown with free helium balloons for each customer. That's the ideal. What's the closest you've seen?
Hello hello,
I'm after some mirrors. Big ones, small ones, rectangular ones and circular ones. Any ideas?
Hello people, how are you?
Glad to hear it. Anyway, I've heard terrible things about Tet so I'm planning on fleeing the country (possibly to the newly re-opened Thailand), what are flight prices likely to be like?
Are they going to be considerably more due to the time of year?
Should I have booked already?
Do you have any alternative Tet getaway suggestions?
Thank you thank you,
Dan.

Hello!
I'm a brand-new New Hanoian, and following the advice in this thread went to the School of Fine Arts and asked around for drawing classes.
Basically, we can join the full time students' morning classes, which run 6 days a week - I'll be doing Mon, Wed, Fri. Each class is 3hrs (8-11) and about $5 - but I'll get a definite price when i start at the beginning of November.
Apparently the classes are either of nudes or still lives, and the medium is usually charcoal. I had hoped for a bit more variety, but we'll see how it goes. Hope to see you there!
Dan.

I read about some poeple taking Lacquer painting lessons in a village outside Hanoi in a little book about lacquering I picked up at Bookworm - I'll get back to you if there were any other details.
I think the main thrust of it was that you need to be in the Lacquer painting village to find people who paint lacquer....
In response to the question: Hi, I have looked at other posts regarding Lacquer Painting lessons but could not find any useful information. Hence, my question : does anyone kn...

Currently renting for $50 per month from Flamingo travel. Brand shiny new Waves - 3km on the clock when we picked them up.
They also taught me and my girlfriend how to ride them and service the bikes as and when.

Luna D'Autunno.
I know you know the answer by now, but you've got to try the Scampagnata pizza. It made me cry.
In response to the question: Whats your vote for the best pizza in Hanoi?...

I'll second grubby - 100,000 is the limit you'll want to pay for a set of headphones with a VOIP quality mic.
The big red shop at the southern end of Ly Nam De has a good selection and unpushy(?) staff.
In response to the question: I am looking for any recommendations on a voice over IP (VOIP) headset. I am looking to spend no more than arond $100. I would prefer a wired headse...

Thank you all for your replies, and please keep the advice coming - just because I'm lazy and feckless doesn't mean my parents and should suffer (they're travelling over to see me).

Checked out those links and it looks GREAT.
Not sure whether there's a huge number of caberet/burlesque dancers in Hanoi though, or how such performances would be viewed by the authorities.
But, sign me up anyhow!

Those are pretty comprehensive answers, but as you're offering drinks around I'll stick my oar in too....
The biggest outlay will definately be rent, you'll be able to rent a place of your own from $250, but most people i know spend about $500 - $600, which will get you a comfortable, centrally located flat. Before you get this far though you'll have to pay 1 month deposit and 3 months rent up front, so put aside at least $2000 for rent (unless you're planning on sharing, like Nick suggests).
Possibly worth shelling out for your own bike as soon as you get here too, as a second hand bike can be picked up for peanuts, and there is no real advantage to renting as the bikes aren't insured - if a rented bike gets nicked, you'll have to buy the owner a brand new one. If you're going to be here for any longer than 6 months it makes financial sense to buy a bike asap and cut it out of your monthly bills.
Hope it all works out for ya!
