rushing to find the best restaurants in Hanoi

If you have the nostalgy of the Middle east food, may be you can go one time, except if you are a specialist of this food.
The place needs to work on the lights but still ok I am always kind of difficult on this subject but it is a part of being confortable or not in a restaurant.
The staff was ok and really try to help.
Hummus, baba ganoush, taboule all these dishes were ok, but still considered as average. Forget about the vine leaves!
The meet was awfull, too cooked and hard and for the kebab this is not acceptable. French fries just ok but I am not coming there to eat French fries.
In my opinion for vegetable and hard and dry local meet, I do not want also to end up paying 400 000 VND per person especially if I get some cheap wine.
They have to review all their cuisine and their price. Deserve 1 star but they just start so I put 2 for expected improvement because with my own experience of the middle east food, you can do far better and it is not so complicated and we need this type of restaurant in a city like Indian, Chinese, French, Italian...

about the venue: Green Mango

rushing to find the best restaurants in Hanoi

I see there are very mixed reviews about this place which probably tells you that they need to improve in consistancy.
Saying that of course I went back there because I think they have a good potential and it will certainly need a little push to become a very nice place.
First of all I can see they are lacking of customers, when you come on a week end days and you have only one group, it shows that the restaurant needs some modification in how it is managed.
For Green Mango it is not the food despite the fact that I was not satisfy last time with one order, this time the food was good, all our orders were tasty, with a nice presentation.
The staff not yet professional, but trying to help, it is fine with me in Vietnam, and it depends also how much you pay for your staff and how many hours you spend in training them. Despite the money and the training you can still be disappointed, but is it not the same story everywhere now?
They repaired some damages done to the decoration and in overall the place is nice, cozy, althought the back room is still looking like a cantine but still fine with me.
In my opinion they still have some problems to fix such as the welcome of the customers, the management and how to attract customers. This restaurant should be full on Friday or saturday with this type of food despite the high price if proper marketing.
Either you lower the price and increase the quality/value to attract clients or you start to rethink about your business plan and work on the marketing, probably you need to invest some additional money.
Have a nice women at the entrance to welcome and place the people, have the chef, sometimes, comes to the table and talk to the clients etc.....

Still a nice place to go sometimes, however the food is getting worse and worse, due mainly to the fact that before they really took the best people who were cooking the food from the street. They kicked them out and copy the receipe and try to do the same. But nothing better than the real things. Too bad. It might not be here forever anyway since I heard that some investors seems to be interested at the spot to make more money.

about the venue: Dong Son Drum Restaurant

rushing to find the best restaurants in Hanoi

A little bit out of the center of hanoi but worth to go for 2 reasons, 1/ for the food and 2/ to discover that Vietnam has, in fact, antique pieces dated from 2200 BC (wrote BP but it is a spelling mistake). One of my friends who has lived in Vietnam for ages and wrote a number of books about the culture used to be always very pessimistic that one day Vietnamese would find any antiques that would not be Chinese origin. There, you have about 10 drums from the region of Dong Song near Thanh Hoa beautifully exposed in the restaurant.
The food was quite interesting, Shrimp rolled salad with Mango Flavor, Dong Son Yin-Yang Soup with dried scallop ( not my favor but nice decorated), Wok Fried tiger prawns with Wasabi Dressing (interesting), Oven Baked Salmon Granting Mayonnaise Cheese Sauce, (unusual), Grilled Pork rib coffee flavor and champagne Sauce (trendy), Fried vermicelli with crab meat Mixed egg, Mango Pudding with fruit dressing salsa ( I do not think the chef is good with dessert)
All of this food served with a good friendly service however that still missing some training.
The food, I will categorize as trendy where you will mix coffee, chocolate, or wasabi with the basic product was interesting and I will probably come back another time to try more dishes there.

rushing to find the best restaurants in Hanoi

first purpose of a restaurant is to eat well, and I had a good lunch. They have a 20 usd 3 courses, or 8 usd first or 16 usd second or 9 usd dessert. What I do not understand in their menu is why I will pay 16 usd for a pizza??? Anyway I had salad with quail egg, nothing special but good. The pasta were well cooked and the sauce quite good. Dessert, frozen tiramissu ??? not too bad.
The service is good, They really want you to feel helped, sometime a little bit too much, I still have a hard time when people interrupts your conversation and it is very the case in the States, but still cannot get use to.
The decoration, normally I appreciate what is done by Thai people, however this one is not my taste, the guy used every material he could find on the market, you have stones, glass, wood, metal etc.......
Concerning the prices, we really have to realize that prices increased a lot in Hanoi. I used to go to Chang Beo a small restaurant managed by a former vietnamese cook at the sofitel plaza, I used to pay 400g meat nice tender with French fries for 75 000 VND, now 155 000 VND and the meat is not even tender anymore.
For a first time to this restaurant, I was not disappointed but not thrilled.

  • Can we do something about the utter rubbish section. It seems that there are some people who are playing with this click. I agree with all the others click but the one who will click on the utter rubbish must be identified and explain.

No the risk is limited and anyway if you get some counterfeit money you can always use it. VietSam do not worry about Jimbo, it seems that he has been spending time in the site to have this type of comments and he might be alone and needs some love. (go find a girlfriend)

Because I do not know what to think about a guy who makes all these nasty comments and cannot even put his name and picture on his profile. anonymous critic, remind you anything.......

Saying that you need some people like that to entertain, so we need him to live and amuse us, credibility, this is another question but it does not matter as soon as we know and be aware.

The purpose of identifying the utter rubbish is obvious to me. First to avoid any abuse or people just being negative as you can see in all your comments, I would love to hear what the people who clicks utter rubbish on your comments, have to say. The other answers do not need any explaination, it speak by itself however someone who disagree, it is interesting and may be positive to know what are their explainations. I am interested in hearing pro and con however it will not change the experience I had. If there are a lot of negative reviews I might go back to the place to have another experience however I will not consider whatever the number of utter rubbish clicks. Now I understand that it might take a lot of bytes and might slow down the website however I do not agree with the flame wars, we seem to be adult and we try with this website to find the best of hanoi and take benefit of the others experience. For me if your intention is to click on the utter rubbish it means to me that you already went to the place and probably gave your opinion before or if not this is the time to give it on the site even in my opinion you do not have the spelling or the well written academic english, I think it is a very discriminatory for non english speaking as a mother tongue. Anonymous Utter rubbish for me is the same thing like the people who write, make comments, criticize on this website under a fake name without putting a picture or give their real name.

How do you want to pay? most of the transaction are made by cash with these landlords who do not really declare anything to avoid paying taxes and of course they do not want to have any trace for bank transfers. Anyway checks or credit cards are not working for these small deals. You can sign a contract and make sur you can get out with 1 month notice before 12 months. Anyway if your contract is not notorized which is probably the case of 95% of the housing contracts it has no value. Welcome in Vietnam and try not to pay deposit because you will have problems to get it back or what is usually done is you pay 3 months in advance and after you pay every month but no deposit.

It seems that some funny guys like to play with the click for nothing or may be sometime I am sure because your comment was not gramatically correct or other considerations that has nothing to do with the purpose of this site, now I just ignore it and everyone should do the same. all 4 other clicks do not deserve any comments except the UR. Go to some other site in the States such as Yelp which is quite well known and you will not find it. However saying that it seems that the creators of this site are still insisting in keeping the click and their explainations did still not convinced me, but I respect that, after all, they are the one who created this site we all enjoy.
