I recently received a package from Canada - Christmas presents from home!!!
The box has clearly been gone through. I expected that. What I didn't expect was the 2.3 kilo package is missing about 1.3 kilos worth of reading materials.
Some things have been 'removed' or is it 'confiscated'. A couple of books (Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes).
Are these now in a postal employee's living room?
Is there any way to 'appeal' or find out why something was confiscated... If nothing else I would like to make the (empty) gesture of complaining to someone official. Anyone know to whom?
Is there any hope of these books showing up?
Any advice on future shipments coming from out of country?
I am not naive about the corruption here - but I am disappointed. Advice (or am I looking at just consolation, now) is welcome.
It would make my poor mom feel better, too. ;)
Thanks!
PS - any ideas on where to find some 'complete works' of Doyle or Shakespeare here in Ha Noi?

I know this is a HUGE long shot, but if anyone happened to take home with them a navy blue Muji trenchcoat from Roots on Friday night I would love to know...willing to pay $60 to anyone who returns it, no questions asked. It was dark, accidents happen!

I'm getting a little stir-crazy in the city this week.
Can anyone recommend some good ways to get out into nature, even if just for the day?

We have a good relationship with a Fair Trade minded company in the USA that is wanting to source large quantities of dried loofah. We have pioneered this activity and loofah products in Viet Nam on a small scale and successfully exporting, but we are now looking to expand. This is an excellent opportunity for an agricultural community on poor land to produce a valuable crop and also to become involved in value-adding the loofah for export. We have a ready market for these products with guaranteed buyers. We are willing to provide training to a suitable community, and all crops would be pre-purchased at fair prices. This is not a one off purchase contract, and we see it as an opportunity to develop a long-term and sustainable income for a community in a poor/marginal agricultural area. Would probably suit an NGO looking for opportunities for rural poor.

Hi all,
I am in need of a conference room for about 23 people next week near Tran Hung Dao and the dike road, if possible. Does anyone have any ideas about hotels or offices in the area that have daily or half-daily rates? And what those rates should be?
Thanks in advance!

Where is the closest place I could get a Dell laptop screen replaced? Does anyone know how much it might cost - the damage (pressure crack, of all things to happen!) is not covered under my Dell warranty. I'm dying without my laptop - help!! :(

Hi All,
Sorry this is a bit of an unusual query and didn't really know which category to post it in, however to make a long story as short as I can.... I am a tour leader and also run a small support program throughout Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. It began with introducing poor, uneducated youth I grew to know over time from my working travels and would ask passengers to help them by buying something from them. From there a few people wanted to help, so I suggested supporting the kids i know in education to better their life and it grew from there I suppose. I am basically the mentor and facilitator, this is of no profit to me in any form and the 'support parent' pays for the education for the child, weather it be english school or/and returning to high school, full or part time depending on the youths life situation as we do not interrupt their daily money earnings.
I have support parents for everyone I personally know now and without going out to seek new youth who may need some aid in education, I thought someone may know of a child in need as I currently have 3 people wanting to support.
If you do please email me and I will give you some more information.
Thanks
Tif

I'll be going to Ninh Binh, Tam Coc, Hoa Lu, and Phat Diem in a couple of weeks for a 2-day trip and was wondering if I need to take malaria medication for this little trip?? I have not yet left Hanoi, so I'm not exactly sure when and where malaria meds are necessary. If I do need to take them, does anyone know if I need a doctor's prescription to buy them and where I can get them??? Thanks so much in advance!!!

First I would like to say hello to everyone, and thank you all for everything that you contribute to this site. My question is hopefully a simple one.....I am recently got my TESOL cert. and was planning on coming to Hanoi in January. However after reading other forums, and talking to a few people who sounded like they knew what they were talking about, I have been advised to wait until atleast February to travel. Susposedly this is due to the Tet festival. Apparently there are next to no schoold open and therefore I would find it hard to find a job. In fact one person recommended to me to not to Vietnam at all stating that because of the econimic situation it is getting increasingly harder and harder to find a job there. This is where I get a little confused. Some say go and some say don't. I would have just applied for a job at an international school but I do not have a BA or any degree for that matter. So I have a dilemma, and hope the members of this website could help me make my decision. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so I now know that mosquito bite scars form from scratching, and I've sworn it off. Could someone please recommend something tried-and-true to use on the unsightly scars that I acquired prior to being enlightened?
