So I though it would be a good idea to come here for three weeks and learn Vietnamese with my 5 yr old daughter (adopted from Vietnam as a baby) The lessons are going OK but only take up a couple of hours in the morning. My dream of leisurely strolls round the city is rather put on hold by a 5 yr old who can't take the heat so..
any suggestions for kid friendly activities? any recommendations for how to get into swimming pool. I contacted most of the big hotels and they either said no or wanted $30 a day which was out of my price range.
Thanks for your help

There's a pretty good outdoor swimming pool up by West Lake called Sao Mai. It's 15,000? VND or so to get in, and if you go at lunchtime you'll have the place to yourself. Other times it can get pretty busy, and bear in mind that it's outdoors so bring plenty of sun screen. To get there, go up Xuan Diệu and take a left down ngo 31. Go down pretty much to the end and take a left through some gates. The pool is at the end on the right. If you think of it, why don't you take some pictures and add it to this site?

Thang Long International Village also has an inexpensive, child-friendly swimming pool. Much like the one mentioned by Grubby, it is in a very sunny location and quite busy. If you don't mind being in the midst of dozens and dozens of crazed youngsters, it may be what you need. It is in the West part of the city...past the Daewoo Hotel a few KM. You can ask a taxi to take you to Lang Quoc Te Thang Long, and then just look for the pool behind the apartment buildings. It's open in the morning and after 3pm.

I often take my little boy swimming at the Army Hotel, it's a smaller pool than Sao Mai and often fairly quiet (however being school holidays at the moment this is not the case). It's on Pham Ngu Lao Street (same street as the History Museum), up behind the Opera House. It's a little pricier than the other 2 options (56,000d for adults, kids half price), but if you're staying centrally then this may be a good option as you won't have to pay transport costs. Price also includes a nice clean towel, so you won't have to lug smelly, wet towels around with you! Hope you have a nice time!

There is a hotel called "Anh Quan" in Ha Dong that has both an indoor as well as an outdoor pool. The outdoor is quite popular with children as it is shallow and has a water fountain. The price is 10,000d/adult. Not sure what it is for children.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Yesterday we tried the Army Hotel, I think. It was round the back of the History Museum and had a ticket office by the gate for "salt water swimming pool". We paid 35,000d and 20,000d child. When we arived at three there was just 5 other boys there, at 4 the crowds began but it was still fun and my daughter loved the little slide into the water
The hotel you went to was not the Army Hotel, but just next door. Also a good spot for kids- but literally packed to the brim when I went there last- well it is school holidays:-)
