Black list!

I've found a list of the top ranked spots in Hanoi but not a list of the ones to avoid like the plague ... and having read a recent review of Bobby Chin's it entered my mind that it might be helpful to have this kind of list.

Would NH readers be kind enough to share the places they'd place on a black list and why?

In the Temple of Literature

I think a black list would be a bit excessive. Reviews on their own can function as a black list anyway - if you're planning on going to a place and then read 3 1-star reviews, that'll make you less likely to go anyway. Places change also, so it wouldn't really be fair to the business to be put on a permanent "black list" just for one bad day.

That said, the Bobby Chinn's thing was pretty crazy. A place I would put on a blacklist is that karaoke joint I reviewed awhile ago: they basically refused to do business with us if they couldn't rip us off.

I do not understand the sense of a "black list". You and everybody else who feels like it can share the experiences for everybody to read.
If one person has had a bad (or good)experience, it should not mean that the place should be damned (or praised).
Make up your own mind, use the comments as guidelines.
Feel free to make up your own "black list", but do not expect the rest of the Hanoian community to share your/the black-lists's views.

I -for instance- had a very delightful dinner at Bobby Chinn's and no stomach problem afterwards. Would go there again, AND take my best friend there.

A beer in a back alley of Hong Kong.

From the perspective of those of us who manage this site, I think jestert79 and Katiti have the right idea. We hope that all users of this site end up with context to make their own decisions. Without doubt, we as a community are not going to agree on all things. Lots of sites apparently get off on the power trip of listing their own not-to-miss places side by side with blacklisted places, but we feel that no place is beyond reproach nor redemption. More than anything, we'd like to see places actually responding to the attitudes expressed here and moving away from the mentality where any single public listing is allowed to hold sway beyond the period it was intended for. We've all visited our fair share of LP listed places (for example) that got their name in the book and immediately ceased to live up to their billing. Such finality of opinion need not exist here...or at least that's what we think. Maybe you disagree. We're willing to accept that.
