Ha Long Bay, especially the area covered by Cat Ba Island, has beaches nearest to Ha Noi. If it will be your first visit, try the Red River delta route with a stop in Hai Phong and ferry crossing to Ha Long. Traveling there takes a good 4-6 hours from Ha Noi by mini-bus but is well worth the trip. On your return to the city, you can go by highway and be back in town in 2.5 hours, traffic permitting. There is a variety of hotels in the vicinity of Halong City.However, try a night or two shipboard on the Bay, age of children permitting. You can easily make arrangements for Ha Long/Cat Ba visits through any of the travel agents in town.
Ha Long Bay is truly the Eighth Wonder of the World. Not to be missed.

The best beaches of Vietnam, in fact, are at the Middle of the country: Nha Trang, Da Nang, Vung Tau ... However they are all so far from Hanoi (1000+ km). I recommend you to try Ha Long first.
