My mom is coming to town and while I am at work she wants to look at some museums. Does anyone have a few good recommendations (other than the Ethnology Museum) of interesting spots?

try the army museum - it has some interesting exhibits - especially the aircraft and the view from the top of the tower is really good and worth the walk up. Perhaps you could get her a copy of the Hanoi Guide too which gives a lot of information on places to go and things to do in Hanoi.

Yeap, get a copy of the Hanoi Guide and get an idea on things to do in Hanoi (though it is really not that much after staying here for a few months or may be I'm just lazy to find out more) Hehe...the closest parameter I get to the Army Museum will be at Highland Coffee right at the wann of the fotress. Don't know much about it apart from seeing them ferrying truck full of fresh army boy and cadet every now and then. Maybe it is also part of the curriculum learning how they come to win the war. So, the National Museum is now having a special exhibit on underwater archeology, saw the banner hanging at the entrance. And opposite of the national musuem will be the Museum of Geology. Apparently, there is also a Revolution Museum (pardon me if I get the name wrong). Somewhere in town there is also a Womens' Museum, wondering what kind of exhibits they have in there. Also, along Ma May street, there is an preserved national-heritage-old-vietnamese-house which is opened for public to visit with an entrance fee of....err...I forgot. It's a joint effort of some Vietnamese French cultural thing.

There is a listing right here on the New Hanoian- I've reviewed a few, so you could check them out. Also the Fine Art Museum would be of interest- just near the Temple of Literature.

Would recommend the Van Mieu (Temple of Literature), Army Museum and History Museum as well. The only downside is that the museums are not air-conditioned so going there in summer is quite unbearable, at least for myself. Nevertheless, enjoy! :)

hi, i am a freelance guide in Hanoi, working for some big travel agents here. I have been working as a guide for 2.5 years. So hopefully i could give u some good recommendations. The best museum here is Museum of Ethnology, then the Army museum, the temple of literature. And I also recommend the memorial house at 87 Ma may str. Shouldnt go to the Womens' museum, its not really good and doesnt have much things to see. Actually when u go to museums here, u need to try to understand the meanings and symbolism of the exhibits. One more thing, shouldnt go there on monday, they all close on Mondays and some close on friday. If u need any informations, just drop me a line at hangvp@hotmail.com. I m more than happy to help u.
