Taxi Coupon - particularly from Noi Bai Airport
My nickname: 黒猫ちゃん (little black cat)

I'll be back in Hanoi soon, and I'd like to avoid spending a high amount of dongs to get to the Hoan Kiem area. I've heard about taxi coupons, and I'd appreciate any information anyone might have on where I could obtain some at the airport? Thanks! :)

Never heard about that but here are some ideas for you.

* There is a local bus that goes from the airport to town. Not sure how much luggage you have or what time you are coming in, but if cost is an issue, take a look into this.

* What we did the last time we flew in (2 of us) was look around for foreigners holding LP's (Lonely Planets) and asked them if they wanted to share a ride. They will charge you a bit more per person, but like everything in Hanoi, this is negotiable, and it still cuts down on the price significantly.

I think the taxi "set" price that they always try to change when you get into the car is something like $17 USD now.

Suggestion - build a relationship with one trustworthy cab driver, get his number and use him for all of your trips around town where you need cargo space, to Noi Bai, or just a ride back from the bia hoi a few nights a month. It's made my life here much easier and less stressful.

Actually, the price is fixed. You just need to ask the receptionist on the airport and they will help you. I don't remember exactly but it cost about 250k - 300k vnd (15 - 20usd). the coupon is only available in company that signs transport contract with a taxi company.
There is a local mini bus in front of the airport too. About 30.000vnd/person.

The official prices for an airport taxi (Noibai, Airport taxi and Viet Thanh) to the city are currently (3.12.) 230k VND for a small and 250k VND for a big car.

There are also buses running to the city, one Jetstar bus and another (no name) bus. They usually park on the very right side when you come out of the terminals. They both cost 25k VND and have fixed destinations where they stop in the city.

Konrad & Kathleen on an Uncle Tan\'s River Safari during a trip to Borneo

The price is indeed fixed -- it's posted right there at the airport. Make sure it's agreed to beforehand, as there are some shady characters (surprise!) lurking around the taxi stand.

We were worried that we'd get screwed if we arrived in the middle of the night, but it turns out that isn't a problem either -- you just need to seek out the (usually) woman running things -- she'll have a walkie talkie. If you're having problems getting the right price, just find her, and she'll sort you out.
