there was a horrible accident yesterday morning. I saw a dead body on the dyke road just up from the Vietcom Bank. I think it must have been a foreigner. He was a big guy and he had been riding a big bike. I'm not sure what happened but it looked like he had been hit by a bus.
Does anybody know him? I just wanted to pass on my condolences to anybody who knew him.
It really makes you think. Everybody please be careful on your bikes.

My condolences. Unfortunately living in Hanoi means you will see a lot of dead bodies and bloody accidents. If you here long enough someone close to you might get really hurt or worse. I have seen whole families wiped on on motorbikes right in front of me driving to work. Grim but true, just look at the way people drive. I hope the expats in Hanoi are driving with insurance and a license(in most cases driving with out a driving license voids your insurance if you have an accident and you are driving). Is there any way to get more information if something like this happens? The local media normally doesn't report negative news about foreigners to avoid scaring off tourist/foreign investors.
Guys, I just checked out a vietnamese website, dantri.com, and they have the news there. They even give out the name and where Fosto works. I'm looking at a news and it says "A foreigner got hit by a moto when she was crossing the road to Hoan Kiem lake while the traffic light for driving people was RED". This one seems to be really old...I wasn't in Vietnam so didn't know. I'm really sorry for Fosto's family back home...

really really sad. you can see the report in the Vietnamese media here (Vietnamese language only): http://www.anninhthudo.vn/Tianyon/Index.aspx?ArticleID=37919&ChannelID=5 seems like was trying to avoid a pedestrian, then hit by a car.
I don't want to sound insensitive but I am couscous what happens to the driver of the car or bus when they drive over someone? Does anything happen to the driver? Is there an investigation to what happened or why? I am asking because I have heard many conflicting stories from, the driver of the car or bus is automatically at fault if hitting a motorbike to it's automatically the foreigners fault no matter what happens. Anyone able to clear this up? or is it case by case.

I'm so sorry for him. Of course, the police will investigate. Base on the proof, they will decide how to punish this driver. Absolutely,He will be judged, punished and even sent to the jail!

Hi all, I think it's kinda inappropriate to start a flood about traffic security in Hanoi based on the Fosto's accident. If eventually you liked the man, his gentle personnality and love for Vietnam, you perhaps could silently give him a last hommage sunday morning at 125 phung Hung street from 7 am to 9 am. Otherwise you can open a separated thread about dangers of Biking. I would thank you very much for that.Regards.
