What type of motorbike should I get?

Ok... So my Minsk is georgeous, comfy to ride, and it was relativly cheap to buy, BUT it is particularly unreliable.

I find a Honda WAVE to small, but i like its ease and revieness.

I want a larger size bike (not nessassarily in cc's) ,comfy, that I can use for a little bit of off roading, that you can get parts for easily? and that is reliable.

I have heared a Bonus' are pretty reliable? Any other suggestions?

Not nessassarily where I can get an exact one but some other names of motobikes that might fit the bill would be great...

Thanks in advance.

Sam

Dear VietSam,

Keep the Minsk and under no circumstances settle for an iota less gorgeousness in your bike. Any losses incurred due to unreliability will be more than offset by how sexy it will look while you're pushing it along the street. Your situation reminds me of the old joke about that other eastern block engineering triumph - the Lada.

Q: Why do Ladas come with a heated rear windscreen?
A: To keep your hands warm while you're pushing it.

Pax,

Candide

We've been pondering the same question for ages. We've looked at countless different bikes, and after months (hmmm... perhaps years?) have decided that we're most interested in a Honda Future Neo or a Yamaha Ex... (shit, now I've forgotten what it's called and the beau is asleep so I can't ask him).

Anyhow, those two look to be the most reliable around, have higher CCage, easily found parts and repairs, and are capable of handling road trips.

We looked at the Bonus as well, but I think that you often end up w/a knock off that basically consists of glued together Chinese parts. Certainly a cheaper option though, and perhaps one to consider.

CHeers for everyones suggestions....Does anyone know anything about the...

Honda GL Pro Neo-tech 4-stroke, 160 cc (Is this the honda future neo someone suggested?)

Suziki GN 125 also looks interesting....

I'm not interested in a scooter as I want something to take on longer trips....

Yes yes i understand how unattactive the Minsk is when I'm wheeling it down the road, believe me experiencing it 8 times in the last 3 months has taught me that, but damm i have had some good times too..

Candide's humour and wit have once again added an insightful yet totally irrelevant twist to the question at hand. Perhaps we could discuss the up and downsides of the minsk in a forum is more relevant...

We've looked at the Honda GL -- they stopped making it in the late 90s, so you'll either end up w/an oldie or w/a fake Chinese bike.

Have been told the Suzuki GN125 is a total piece. Great for city driving, but never for a trip.

Do NOT by a chinese "knockoff" motor bike. They won't last and are unreliable. Do your self a favor and buy a real Yamaha / Suzuki / Honda. These bikes are capable of "long" trips, seats are not very comfy though.

But... with regards to the seat, you can always get yours altered or have a new one made -- something we've thought about b/c we're always two on a damn Wave and the old sitsbones get a bit sore on the roadtrips!

So, in short, don't let the seat itself be the determining factor -- that's something that's(relatively) easily solved.

The Yamaha Exciter has a 135cc engine and the greatest torque of all the semi autos that you can currently buy. As westerners we are "sadly larger" so need more power so unless you want to embark on the 150cc fully auto range, the Exciter would seem to be the way to go. Test drive it and you will see the difference between the other 100-125cc offerings.

I've been riding a bike in Hanoi for over 10 years and in my experience a Honda is more reliable than a Yamaha when it comes to popular, commercial bikes like the Wave, the Jupiter, or the Exciter.

Yamaha bikes just become remarkably worse after a while(>3 years), even when you service them regularly. In fact you always see a Honda 67, Honda Cub 82 or those old school Honda Dreams from the early 90s. When did you ever see an old Yamaha bike? Ok maybe we didn't import too many Yamahas back in the day, but I don't even see the bikes that are only 10 years old like the Sirius now.

I was thinking of getting an Exciter myself but one of my friends has had it for 2 years and he's already on the hunt to buy a new bike. I test drove it a few months ago and man it really sucked. Also this bike is really tiny and will definitely break down if you put 3 foreigners on it.
