Where is the best place in town to buy blankets? We just walked all along Hang Dieu street last night and found nothing but floral prints and pastels. Gross.
Any simple blankets around town?
Make it quick, I've been freezing my ass off every night this week!

There are some beautiful plain silk throws in shops near St Joseph's Church, but otherwise for blankets maybe try Uma or Dome.

I'm not looking for silk, but Uma and Dome are good ideas. I remember seeing bedding on Son Tay Street too, so I'll check it out and post the results. Thanks guys.

Everon also has some plain stuff that isn't horribly gaudy. And there are those nice "Canadian" and "Australian" bedding shops around that also have nice things (think there's one on Ng. Thai Hoc, one one Le Van Huu, one on Hoa Ma....). And, not to sound like a broken record, but... Metro has some plain white ones. Also a few patterned ones as well, but didn't look closely enough to gauge the ew floral factor. The other thing I'd suggest is those beautiful silk ones in many tourist shops -- esp. around the cathedral.

I saw some plain blankets at Big C last week. Also the bedding place on the bottom floor of Hanoi Towers had some non-flowery stuff, but it wasnt cheap. I have been tempted many times to buy the uggliest, cheapest blanket I can and some plain material and make a trip to the tailors. But alas, the blankets I have now are enough for this temp, so no need. Yet.

Alright... we seem to be striking out here. I've visited several of these places. They definitely have bedding. Big comforters and expensive quilts. But... I'm just looking for a simple, regular blanket. Not a two million dong comforter or huge bedding set with pillow cases and dust ruffles. That's all I'm finding anywhere in town. We did see something near exactly what we're looking for at Big C, but they were just small throws for sitting around on your sofa. Not anywhere near queen size. Is it possible to just buy a normal Western blanket in Hanoi?

well, i bought a duvet (the inside part of the comforter?) and had a cover made. my landlord took me to the market on Pho Hue street (fabric market). i picked out the materials for the bottom & top sheets, and cover. they can make it in a few days! it wasn't expensive, and if you don't want a duvet cover, i'm sure they can make a simple blanket. I use the cover without the duvet in the summer. anyway, if your Vietnamese isn't great and you're not sure about fabric prices, bring someone in the know to help out. it's fun and you get exactly (or very close to) what you want!
Thanks. Can you give me a few more details about the location? Pho Hue is a fairly long street.

There's fabric upstairs at Cho Hom. The fabric street nearby is Phung Khac Khoan -- runs between Tran Xuan Soan and Hoa Ma (just outside of Cho Hom). Shrimp_Whiskers: where did you buy your duvet and how much did it cost (ish)?

On the street running north of the Botanical gardens, there was a truck selling comforters and sheets today (typical kind you would find in a shop like Everon). I don't know if they will be there tomorrow, but I bought a thick comforter and a decent quality duvet cover for 450k today. I saw similar items in the shops for at least 30% more in price.
I forgot to add... there are a couple of new bedding shops that have opened up in Vincom towers (maybe 2nd or 3rd flr?). They have really nice plain sheets (even Egyptian cotton) and bedding sets as well as good quality towels and simple house furnishings. The items are a pretty well priced for the quality (although not the cheapest option) and they even have a pretty good selection of down comforters.
The market on Pho Hue must be called "Hom" Market. It's around Pho Tran Xuan Soan. Sorry, I'm bad with street names and directions. I can say it's between Hoan Kiem and the street Vincom is on. I bought the duvet on Quan Thanh at an Everon store. It was around $380,00, I think and they had a price list, so no haggling involved. I looked in Vincom shops and found that everything was so expensive and just as flowery/ugly as other places. Good luck!

I bought a plain white Everon comforter (200 x 220) off a truck similar to the one Spin bought from for 210k just earlier today right by Van Mieu. It would seem that that the colder winds are bringing about impromptu comforter shops along with the chills. Brrr.
wow, miss pride. good price! i actually can't remember the price of mine, but i think it was 300k vnd something. not $380,000! whoops.
The two guys said 220k, I said 200k for the heck of it. I was stooping down by the comforters (they were all in individual clear carry bags) at the time and my legs got tired so I stood up. They took that as a sign that I was leaving and dropped the price to 210k. It's a fair nice comforter, too. I used it last night, and it was light and airy, but quite warm. Seems like the real Everon deal to me. :) If your toosh isn't freezing just yet, it might be worth walking around the Van Mieu/Temple of Literature area to see if you catch the truck on one of the street corners. I came across them at ~4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. If you find them, don't pay more than 210k for a 220x200 comforter. Smaller comforter sizes I saw ranged from 180k-200k (without bargaining). They have comforter covers as well, but with fabric and seamstresses both so readily available, why settle for ghastly floral mayhem? Besides, unlike the comforters, the covers looked none too clean.

Maybe Parksons, it will be expensive (very) but they have Cannon cotton bedding from the USA and may have blankets too.
