Hi!
Does anyone know a reliable place (in Hanoi OR Saigon) where I could obtain Elocon (mometasone topical cream), Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream with Natural Colloidal Oatmeal, Benadryl Itch Stopping Cream or Anti-Itch Cream, and/or silicone gel or sheets? I'm battling minor but persistent eczema and hungry hordes of mosquitoes. I'm battling minor but persistent eczema and hungry hordes of mosquitoes.

Try the pharmacy at Family Practice in Van Phuc. The one in front of Tran Tien plaza by the lights has some of the creams. Check it out. The thing that works for us, but surely not eczema, is tiger balm. It stops the itch immediately. We have put away all our creams we brought from home, as teh tiger balm is so efficient. Get mosquito repellents, the electrical ones are the best. I did not get bitten here but while away on holiday when we ran out of cream.

Thanks again, R.! I'll have to look into tiger balm. Does it have a strong scent? I've tried "green oil" - the locals seem to swear by it - but the scent isn't exactly subtle. I'll definitely look into the electrical mosquito repellents - any suggestions?

We've used Tiger Balm for years. It's a great temporary remedy for a variety minor skin ailments, muscle strain and even small headaches. To call Tiger Balm's fragrance strong or pungent is an understatement. It is singularly identifiable by it's powerful aroma so it's best used at home. For a concoction with a less potent scent, try to find White Flower Oil. It's not as versatile as Tiger Balm but works pretty well on muscle pain.

go to a local market and buy the local mint and the tulsi or holy basil then make into a poultic. They're cheap, natural and effective. Look up their healing properties in the net

If you wander down to Lan Ong Street and check out one of the Chinese apothecaries you should be able to find Comfrey - symphytum officinale. (Sorry I don’t know it’s Chinese name.) I used to use this all the time when I was in the weeds in North Thailand where the smallest scratch would turn ulcerous The roots and leaves contain allantoin which encourages cell division and cures tropical ulcers and other skin problems. It will get rid of scar tissue over a period if used regularly. It is prepared in a cream or Vaseline base. Just rub it on thinly (as you would tiger balm) twice a day. A nice topical anti mozzie rub is kaffir lime leaves (citronella) from any wet market. Smells good and keeps the little buggers away.
