Hey, I know this isn’t really the right place to ask this but i don’t know where else to find out. I'm going to be living in Hanoi for much of next year and was wondering if anyone knew of/learnt off a Vietnamese teacher in Sydney, Australia. Northern dialect preferred, but I would be happy with anybody who speaks Vietnamese. The only courses that I’ve been able to find have been full time at Sydney uni. Thanks.

Maybe try Cabramatta library or something like that mate - there are quite a few shop signs in Vietnamese there, and you should be able to rustle up a friendly and helpful person.

Yeah I'd ask some Vietnamese people for recommendations. Good for you that you're keen to learn the language... I did some lessons in Aus but didn't pick it up properly till I came here. So best way to learn is to study intensively in-country so you can practice with local people at the same time. Good luck!

Where about in Sydney do you live ? I have a network of Vietnamese abroad students in Sydney who would be willing to do some Vietnamese tutoring.

If you can't find someone, you could get started with Cds and student books 'Vietnamese for foreigners' by Victoria University of Technology, National Asian Languages Project (ISBN 0 646 13322-5). Bought those here in Hanoi in a bookstore, but I assume you'd be able to order them in Sydney as well.

Mmmh, the system turned that into a phone number but it really is the ISBN number for ordering books.
