Okay, I'm used to eating Pho with Hoisin Sauce and I can't find any here. The strangest thing is that i can't remember any restaurant I've eaten at in the US that didn't have hoisin sauce. Yet here, in the birthplace of Pho, they have none. Anyone know where I can get some?

No one in Vietnam eats Pho with a Chinese sauce, mark. If someone does, I can say he/she doesn't really know pho.

Well this is Hanoi, the birthplace of Pho, so I guess I really don't know Pho. Now that we've cleared up that fact, know where I can get some hoisin sauce?

i was able to buy some at L's Place and/or Phuong's shop by the Vine Annex on Xuan Dieu. But it was sporadically. Never in constant supply. ps: i don't buy it for my Pho ;)

Hoisin sauce in Pho. Them's fightn' words in these parts...
I knew my life would change coming to Hanoi, but I didn't think it would change that much. Pho without hoisin sauce! thats like a hamburger without the bun! Thanks for the info, I'll check out the two places and see if I can get some there.

Hoisin sauce in pho is a southern phenomenon. Most Vietnamese restaurants in America have hoisin sauce as overseas Vietnamese are mainly southerners. It can be purchased in most supermarkets in HCMC and you can even purchase freshly made hoisin sauce in some market places there as well. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find in Hanoi although someone told me you can find it in Big C. In Vietnamese, it is called 'tuong an pho' This sauce is also used with 'goi cuon' (fresh rolls with shrimp, pork, and veges)

I'll criticize not what Hoisin others may choose, but as Pho me, give me Pho Bac or give me naught.
Big C was the first place I checked, it definitely doesn't have it there. There is a tuong an pho but its a watery mess, not hoisin sauce.
thanks for the extra info Spin, make sense now.

I bought a bottle just the other day at Dan's supermarket, Ba Dinh. Just can't remember if it was the Dan's in the Ngoc Khanh carpark behind Kim Ma or the new one on Linh Lang. I'm sure it wasn't Hang's (The 'Happy Mart' is a bit of a misnomer since the surly security guard practically crash tackles me each time I go in there, trying to get me to leave my bag with him. Maybe I have a dodgy looking head?) You could also try Western Canned Foods at 66 Ba Trieu. Cheers

mark, i hear you on the hoisin sauce cravings! i got very used to it in the states. i was in saigon for more than a month and they almost always have hoisin on the pho table (so don't let anyone tell you they don't use it in vietnam). i was quite disappointed when i got to hanoi and there weren't no hoisin! i have considered carrying it around with me in case of emergency (much to the amusement of my boyfriend). i don't know where to buy it yet, but i know that the chain Pho 24 has it on the table. so if you're really craving it, you can splurge on their over priced soup. it can be worth it!

I was in Citimart Vincom last Saturday and I saw hoisin sauce sold there.
Mark103: i just stopped to this Mini Mart on Xuan Dieu http://newhanoian.xemzi.com/en/venue/show/2522/Mini-Mart and i saw some Hoisin sauce. i bought them all so if you want some, i sell them 20$/bottle. Still interested??? just kidding. They had a few bottle if you are still looking for some. cheers

i went to pho24 and they had hoi sin sauce there! having become used to not having it, it almost felt weird having hoi sin altho i slathered my meat in it anyway!
Yum.. had my first bowl of pho today with hoisin sauce, not only did i make dipping sauce with it, but i poured some in the soup too!
