internet troubles

Today the internet seemed very very slow at my hotel (still looking to rent an apt) and when I went out to a cafe by the lake, the same thing happened. Is this normal Hanoi internet service. I've been here for a couple of weeks, but this is the first time I've had this problem. Or did I just pick a bad hotel AND a bad cafe?

THEY are adjusting the firewall for our um protection. Happens every once in awhile around these parts.

well THEY have been wreaking havoc on my multi-tasking (translation- internet surfing and general procrastination). At least nothing was due today. Now I have to go back to my hotel and apologize for getting huffy. :(

Will this be just today or for longer? And can I get huffy with THEM?

Of course, they'll be glad to hear from you. Would you like the number to file a grievance?

i suppose i should move up the date on my return ticket prior to filing my huffy grievance. I suppose babbling angry in bad Vietnamese won't endear me to THEM.

oh, and thanks for the info. now, back to the hotel to xin loi ...

Its not true Atomic, one cable (belongs to Viettel) broke this morning due to the flood that we had. It has nothing to do with the firewall!
FPT subscribers was affected but not VNN, I think they slowly get back to normal now.

Since I have been here, I have been going nuts with all the internet problems here. Oh well. I guess I shouldn't complain as I am a guest here.

I also cannot access certain websites. And they aren't sensitive websites.

I've had heaps of trouble at home lately with wireless connections and my mac and also with cable internet. My solution thus far has been to do nothing at all and wait for it to come back, which it usually does after a couple of days. Trying to change your computer settings etc which have been working perfectly until now or calling in someone to 'help' you will only send you round the bend. C'est la vie.

Splash

for what it's worth, I have had some luck with 'refreshing' my DSL connection by running my modem's diagnostics. Apparently FPT is apt to drop you if you don't seem to be using the internet. So much for 'always-on internet.'

If you don't know how to access your modem's administration web server (usually 192.168.0.1 or somesuch), then this method is probably not for you.

I gave up on "wireless" in HN. Regular cabled connection was bad enough. I just string a long network cable throughout the rooms I am in.
