I got here a few months ago. I've been using ebay for years. I wanted some old camera equipment--50 year old cheap Russian cameras and 30 year old Nikons, lenses and filters.
I ordered about 10 different things, to the tune of about $350 7 weeks ago.
One camera and one lens arrived from the Ukraine and Russia after only 3 weeks.
The packages had been opened and resealed by the Vietnamese Post office, but the equipment was unscathed.
The rest of it, I haven't seen yet--7 weeks down the road.
Should I be worried? Does it just take a long time? Or do Post Office Employees go "shopping" in our parcels? I mean, none of this stuff is very attractive--really old cameras and lenses that look it. Not spiffy new digital things...
What is your experience?
Any advice? Should I quit my ebay habit? Should I pay for Federal Express?

best go FedEx if you can't quit Ebay. I am still waiting on Christmas packages from 2006. Also, have received packages where contents listed when sent have gone missing. Good luck!

The post office here, is manned by a bunch of lazy theiving ba**ards. Same as above, either missing all together, or items taken out of package. We tell friends now to TNT, FEDEX etc anything to us. My parents forgot the last time (This May gone)and sent by normal means. Anyway we got the notice card off the post office to come and collect package. My wife went down and they said it was a mistake, as they couldn't find the package any more. Anyway knowing the towrags that they are, she went to the manager, and demanded to see the logs. Low and behold it had arrived but gone missing, not their fault fault apparently !!!!!!!!

As I write this, 165 people have read it and I have only 5 stories? Come on people--I need some closure here! Did I get suckered believing "rain, sleet nor snow" applied here or do I have a hope that the people in the Post Office are as good and honest as 99.99% of the people I've meet here? Fess up. What's happened to you. Does Ebay work here or not? Thanks to those who have frightened me so far. Nick

Well, ebay might work, but not the postal system. I say don't use it , all above here is true. I still ebay but get sent to friends and family and ask travelling friends/work mates to bring the goods when they come, or pick it up when I am home. My experience is the same, though one can only wonder what the locals would want with my missing items, including XL size womens nightwear???? Your camera gear would be perfect for someone to, um, find and resell. pippasweetie

Nothing wrong with ebay but the postal service here is a bunch of thieving bastards !! Most of the time they are to lazy to deliver it to your address so they go and make you pick it up. When you have the nerve to mention that the item was damaged by their inspection, then they get angry with you or just act dumbfounded !!

I never would order anything to ship to VN unless the shipper is from Asia. Still, even then, expect 4 weeks min to get the item.

Yes same as all the above - not sure why but it seems to depend on where it's sent from .Got a package from HK no probs and quickly - and you say you got a package from Russia... It's the packages from Europe and America that don't seem to make it- and it might be at the customs stagfe that items go missing

regardin vn ebay , we suffer 2 much disadvantage . vn paypal users can only buy . post office & customs r high risk . and there's no way u can sue 'em . and if u r not happy with items u receive , u wouldnt b able 2 return 'em 2 da sellers... fedex seems 2 be safe but cost a fortune

Here we are about 75 days down the road. Still no sight of my two cameras: one from Israel and one from Colorado. However, a small cause for hope: the box of filters has arrived from Las Vegas and an envelope with a light seal kit for a Canonet has arrived from Texas! 75 days down the road. Will keep you posted. The expensive, semi valuable stuff, still has yet to arrive ($75 Russian Camera from Israel and $60 Canonet from Denver). I decided to have the Nikon stuff sent to a friend in Boston who will FEDEX it to me. Keep those stories coming!

Nick, I just received some DVD's I bought from ebay.com in (beginning) August, thats almost 3 months for something shipping from Japan Via air mail. I guess they needed extra time to watch and copy the DVD's...the package was opened and taped back. Keep patient your stuff will arrive once they are done with them :)

I am pretty new to Hanoi (I am a Southerner), but I never had any problems with any shipment from abroad in Saigon for many years, Amazon or others. Sometimes a few weeks late, but never lost. Seems that here in Hanoi things look different. And I just ordered from ebay, trusting in my experiences from Saigon!!!! My cats are waiting for their prezzie (leopard-print crinkle tunnel!!). Just hope that Vietnamese people do not appreciate cats' playthings! Otherwise I am in BIG trouble!!!!

The Vietnamese postal service is embarrassingly horrible. Don't count on anything of value arriving through their services. Use DHL whenever possible, or FedEx as a second decent option. On a related note, here is an article about an emerging partner of Ebay's in Vietnam... http://www.onepay.vn/news_detail.action?news_id=10

OK Gang, here is an update on one of my camera's (well, the camera that was supposed to be mine!). This is a note from the guy in Colorado who sold it to me: Nick - Well, I guess you can forget about receiving the camera. The post office has returned the package to me,with apologies. apparently the package was torn open and "rifled" (that was the term used in the accompanying letter of explanation). the International Air Mail Records Unit in Daly City, CA forwarded a four page "Cargo Irregularities Report" from Ho Chi Minh,Vietnam with the comment that the package and the form was to be delivered to me, as it had been rifled and that the Postal Inspectors have been notified. Sorry 'bout dat. Do you want me to mail the "report" to you? Let me know. The Vietnam Post Office is filled with scoundrels and theives. Beware.

I'm not sure whether this will help anyone or not but apparently it is better to get parcels sent to "official" addresses (such as places of work) or PO Boxes where possible and this reduces the chances of them going "missing". Quite what the reasons are for how it reduces the chances I don't know but if anyone out there has the option of using a work address they might want to consider that instead...
