Eat, Drink, and Be Merry (Compliments of TNH)

Well, that was quite a night. I dare say it's taken me the better part of this week to recover. Through the course of last Saturday night, we had well over 200 New Hanoians come through the doors of Funky Buddha to meet their fellow community members and see what this new bar was all about. There were lots of new faces for the TNH community, and Funky Buddha got to show their stuff with hours of free beer and vodka. While the free drinks may have gotten a great many of us out that night, Vanessa at Funky Buddha tells me that many of you are already flocking back to their establishment for more nights in the sort of environs you just don't get in the Old Quarter. Such merry making is on the horizon again already. Mark it down people: Saturday, May 24th @ Noc Bar - La Scala. While this place isn't exactly new, it will be new to many of you. It has quietly been building its customer base and reputation throughout the winter with a variety of dance and music oriented events, as well as by developing a great relationship with the Latino community in Hanoi. Now, they're ready to announce their arrival to the most important community of all: you. On the 24th, the free booze will be flowing, music will be playing, and the masses will be gathering. Stayed turned for more details as the big day approaches. In the meantime, the month of April is wrapping up, and you all know what that means... For the dining aspect of this month's user contributions prizes, we'll be sending a distinguished New Hanoian and three of his or her friends to one of Hanoi's newest fine dining experiences. Located on the always buzzing Trang Tien street, HanoiHanoi Cafe & Restaurant might be easily overlooked at first. Don't let the modest street front fool you. Inside is an expansive space with all the little touches of Hanoi elegance. Their wide ranging menu of European and Vietnamese cuisine will be on full display as the foursome is treated to dinner for four accompanied by a bottle of one of their fine wines. After a night like that, our lucky guests won't be cruising around Hoan Kiem with any doubts about where a night's fine dining might be found. Just a short jaunt down Trang Tien will lie HanoiHanoi Cafe & Restaurant, waiting to to greet them with a presence not so easily passed by again. For another worthy user, this is going to be a chance to take their New Hanoian fame and see it immortalized...etched in drink, as it were. For our winner and a dedicated companion, Lo Lo Bar has a job for them. The pair will have a long night belly up to the bar, spirits mixing and blending, glasses tilting skyward, and all for the sole purpose of developing a new cocktail for the bar...that will bear their New Hanoian username. Of course, it will require hours of trial and error, each of which must be tested top to bottom. No, this prize is not for the faint of heart. Only a true dipsomaniac in the most Hanoian of senses need apply. Lo Lo Bar is ready to make you a permanent part of their cozy neighborhood scene. Every Truc Bach resident that strolls down the market street of Hoe Nhai to have another after-work drink in the comfort of this quintessential Hanoi local will see your TNH username right there behind the bar, tempting them to send the night into a frenzy inspired by your own taste for mischief. Think you deserve a permanent place in the nightlife of Hanoi? Show me some bar reviews that prove it. Lo Lo Bar and their every future customer is waiting... There you have it. A pair of New Hanoian user contribution prizes representing the eating and drinking we all love Hanoi for. But let us not forget the merriment. With the weather warming up (but not yet oppressive), it's time to spend some weekends outside. On May 10th, the Hanoi community will have a chance to venture back to the American Club for some live music and family friendly events during the Australian Big Day Out. For children, there will be a jumping castle, face painting and many games, and for the adults, fabulous wine, food and cold beer plus live music in the evening and not forgetting plenty of chances to win prizes. Advance tickets (100,000VND) can be purchased from AusCham, or one can get tickets at the gate (150,000VND). Two weeks later, we'll have the Noc Bar - La Scala meet up on the 24th. The weather is just going to be ideal for this 19th floor roof bar with its massive terrace overlooking West Lake and all of Hanoi. If you haven't been yet, mark it on your calendar, mark it on your map, and spread the word. It will be the biggest gathering yet. Enjoy the beginning of summer all, The staff of the New Hanoian
