A Weekend of Winners and Live International Music

Well friends, April is upon us. March proved a productive one in these parts, but before we get to the fun of naming our always deserving user contribution prize winners, we need to remember that this April starts as few have in Hanoi. On this very Saturday, at the American Club on Hai Ba Trung street, Hanoians-in-the-know are going to be treated to a line up of musical acts that just don't make it this way very often. Many of you already have the day set aside for this incomparable affair, but those who still haven't made Saturday plans should look no further. This is what you'd be missing: In honor of the Minsk Club's 10th year anniversary, the American Club will be playing host to an all day, outdoor international music festival with bands and DJs from six countries. Acts include: Both Cheese, a funky indie-rock band from Tokyo, Japan, Peabody, an alternative rock act from Sydney Australia, a rocking singer-songwriter James Harries from the UK as well as the experimental pop duo from Bangkok, Stylish Nonsense, who Hanoians will remember from the CAMA party last summer. There will also be local expat and Vietnamese rock bands storming the stage as well as a roving H’mong music group bringing a touch of northern Vietnam to proceedings. DJs from the UK, Australia and Japan will also be flying in and the CAMA Sound-System will be playing suitably cool tunes all day long in the chill out tent where guests can kick back with cocktails. The Ho Chi Minh City-based Jetlag posse with their main amigo DJ Jase will also be providing quality visuals and tunes. All day long there will be a festival atmosphere with entertainment for kids and stalls serving Japanese, Indian and western grub provided by Ren, Tandoor, and Al Fresco’s restaurants respectively as well as authentic Vietnamese street food. There's no doubt that the New Hanoians will be well represented there. Add yourself to the ranks. You'll be in good company, like a few of this month's winners... Our first winner for contributions in the month of March goes to a New Hanoian who got his contributions started immediately after landing in town. Then, after an initial flurry of reviews, we didn't see his name for a while. Far from disappearing, however, he was simply busy exploring this city and working his way into the scene. March marked the triumphant return of Michal, and his months away provided some award winning material. To thank him for his top notch insights, we're going to be sending he and five friends to Noc Bar - La Scala. There, the six of them will be treated to an evening of 19th floor views of West Lake and the surrounding city, complete with dinner straight from the grill and overflowing jugs of their specialty drinks. If they pick the right night, they might get to enjoy one of Noc Bar - La Scala's dance and music evenings. It's quite a scene to hand over to one of our distinguished members...free dinner and drinks, dozens of dance enthusiasts doing their thing, and some of the best views to be found in the entire city. Something tells us that Michal won't be at a loss for how to deal with such an evening. Next up is a New Hanoian who is no stranger to hearing his named called when prize time comes around. On top of his recent month of stellar reviews, he's also done more than just about anybody to absolutely canvass his neighborhood for new spots to turn the New Hanoian community on to. All told, jestert79 has written 50 reviews for all of you, and this was one of his signature months. For his generous contributions, he'll get a chance to keep on giving. He and seven of his lucky friends or officemates will be heading to the Old Quarter for lunch at Kiti Restaurant. Within the quaint, understated decor that reflects the owner's (Mr. Kien's) many years spent working in the restaurant industry in Europe, their party of eight will enjoy their choice of Kiti's increasingly popular lunch set meals. Many living and working in Hoan Kiem district already take advantage of these affordable interpretations of fine Vietnamese dining. Jestert79 and his crew will be the next to discover it. Finally, we have a man who needs no introduction. If the name hanoiRob means nothing to you yet, you really need to take a few moments to go over the contributions of this elite review writer. Few, if any, on this site shine a more revealing light on Hanoi. Well folks, he was at it again. His review of Ashima on Triệu Việt Vương street was a clear favorite of you all this month. To congratulate him, we'll be sending him to Festa, where we can guarantee that he'll be treated with a whole lot more respect than he experienced on his Ashima visit. From a perch high above Ly Quoc Su street, hanoiRob and three friends will be wined and dined to the tune of rooftop Italian BBQ and glasses of fine Italian wine. We all know Rob will give the place a thorough once-over (be it on a prize visit or otherwise), but Festa welcomes such discerning tastes in their effort to establish themselves as one of the best in a very competitive Italian restaurant field. Alright folks, enjoy the music this weekend and head back this way to tell us all about it on Sunday (or maybe Monday, what with the way we're all likely to be feeling on Sunday). Cheers, The Staff of the New Hanoian
