October Prizes -- You Choose A Winner!

Well now. It's been a while. The last time we crossed paths (via the New Hanoian newsletter anyway), the October meet up at Bar Red was just about to kick off. Despite the rain and the somewhat unfamiliar location, a group of hardy souls showed up to take advantage of all that free booze. It was a fun crowd that showed that the true New Hanoians out there can brave any elements and plow through any obstacles. The next meet up is in the works, and we're thinking that we should balance out our last foray into the wilderness with a bit of bia hoi to bring us all back home. In fact, the thought of a hundred (or more) New Hanoians decending upon a baffled local beer joint truly gets the blood pumping. It could be the stuff of legend. Now, to find a spot. Our first deliberations (over bia, of course) led to us to think that the site of our first, informal meet up might be appropriate. But, while Bia Hoi Zin is more than up to the task, what better way to celebrate the populism of bia hoi than to have you New Hanoians weigh in on the matter? Thus, I direct you to the newly formed Bia Hoi Appreciation Society. This just created organization is an exemplarly demonstration of what is possible with the now acitve Groups function on the latest version of www.newhanoian.com. Sign in. Join the group. Then, tell us which bia hoi you think should host our next get together. If your bia spot of choice is not yet listed, simply click on the "Enter New Spot" link and turn us all on to it. Get your votes in soon. November is right around the corner. Yes, the New Hanoian has undergone some changes recently. The latest version of the site has been out since last week, and we're working hard to make sure it is up to the task of representing you and this fair city. Your feedback has been much appreciated, so don't be shy about sending more our way. Many additional changes are in store, and we'll send out a comprehensive newsletter of these features just as soon as we've got them rolling. For now, explore and let us know what you'd like to see happening here. We're truly excited by the reaction so far. The community continues to grow, and we've had a recond month of contributions to show for it. As busy as we've been, we haven't failed to notice. This month to date, we've had more than one hundred new reviews of Hanoi businesses! With that kind of action, this month's user contribution prizes may be the most competitive yet. Luckily, we've got just the sort of prizes that are up to the task. To start out, we have a look at another side of bia in Hanoi. Local beer is flourishing, and another example of this is the proliferation of brewpubs. High on the list of most discussed is Goldmalt. One of our users and three of his or her friends will have bottomless mugs of their divinely hopped brew for an evening. Their small Tran Phu location may be inconspicuous enough to miss the first couple times past, but an evening draining mugs of their brew will likely put an end to that. Master brewer Mr. Long will be on hand to ensure that the evening is a full one. Next up on the list is another drinking bonanza. New to the Hanoi scene, Tuna is ready to announce itself. Carrying on the tradition of chill Old Quarter night spots, this multi-level bar is ready to treat a New Hanoian member and his or her friends to a free night of takin' it easy. One of our distinuished New Hanoians will have a bottle of their choice to go with all the mixers they need for the evening. Make it Grey Goose, Jameson, Jack Daniels, or perhaps Captian Morgan. Whatever they choose from the bar's well-stocked shelves, Tuna will be ready to turn one their floors of lounge space into a complimentary private party. Finally, Hanoi's latest trend toward sheesha filled bars has reached a new peak. Thousand Night and Night sports a second floor lounge with dozens of these much appreciated smoking implements. One of our chosen New Hanoian members will have a chance to invite three other friends to delight in the full range of pleasure this newest lounge/cafe has to offer. Our winning member and three friends will start out their evening with a complimentary dinner of Arabian cuisine. They'll then retire to the lounge for a round of after dinner smoke and drinks. Each member of the party will enjoy a couple rounds of cocktails, and a turn at the sheesha. With tobacco imported directly from the Middle East, a more authentic sheesha smoking experience is difficult to find in Hanoi. Three stellar prizes, and lets not forget that this month marks the first opportunity for you New Hanoians to select one of the winners. As we mentioned in the previous newsletter, one of these monthly prizes will now go to be best review written for the month. "Best" will be determined by the number of props they get from their fellow site members. When you're reading over the latest reviews, don't foget to click "Well Written", "Funny", "Accurate", or "Useful" for those reviews that strike you as particularly well-crafted. Likewise, if you think that somebody has intentionally misrepresented a place for one reason or another, don't be shy about labeling it "Utter Rubbish". This is one of our many built in ways to discourage inappropriate posting. If you simply disagree with the opinion of the poster, however, review it yourself! We expect there to be controversy and disagreement over just about every place in town, so get your opinion out there. Currently, Snellopy's review of Indochine has a narrow lead over the competition. Give it a look along with all the other 100+ reviews for the month and weigh in on which one you think should be walking away with a prize. Snellopy just last month collected a user prize for his outstanding contributions, and he may well be on his way to another this month. It will be up to you to decide. Alright, there's only a few more days left in October, so those in the running should get those last reviews in. Everyone else, put those finishing touches on the Halloween costumes, check the event calendar for any parties, and keep sending us all your valuable feed back. The Staff of the New Hanoian
