If you missed out...

...then it's a damn shame. We all had a great time at the meet up last Friday at Finnegan's. We all owe them a round of thanks for their outstanding hospitality. We can only hope all of our future hosts will follow their lead. For those who did make it out, we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did. It was great to see so many new faces, and to meet the people behind some of our most interesting site personas (looking at you Dr. Wobegon). Come mid-October, keep those weekend evenings open. We'll be throwing another one of these bashes. With every one we throw, we seem to get more and more reasons to have another. Many of us didn't head home until around 5am last time...what will the next one bring? We had a fair number of new sign ups just before and at the meet up (something about free beer always seem to lead to that...), so let us introduce you to another of our monthly traditions that puts you in a position to come into some complimentary good times around Hanoi. Now that you're a member, all you need to do is write reviews of your experiences around Hanoi, enter new places into our site that are not yet listed, or answer question that have been posted to Ask A New Hanoian, and your contributions might just win you one of our monthly prizes. In the coming weeks, we'll also be releasing a new version of www.newhanoian.com that will give you even more ways to get involved and share your experiences with your fellow Hanoians. It's plenty rewarding in its own right, but we've never been ones to settle on "good enough". Here's a couple examples of what were talking about. The first of this month's monthly prizes comes compliments of the Oregano Deli. No longer the hidden gem that many of us used to speak of in hushed tones, this little eatery has quickly gained a reputation as one of the premiere lunch and delivery spots around Hanoi. In a city that is already renowned for its affordable dining spots, Oregano Deli still takes people by surprise with a quality of food at a price that would fit the stingiest backpacker's budget. Have your doubts? Well, they are prepared to show you what they can do in a big way. For one of our top contributors of this month, the Oregano Deli is going to cater lunch for ten people at your place of work. There will be salads, sandwiches, desserts, and the full range of their Euro-styled entrees. Free lunch for ten? Only here at the New Hanoian can you get something like that for just writing a bit about what you think Hanoi is all about. The second prize of this month comes from a long time venue of the city that is in the process of reinventing itself. The Spotted Cow, now under the guidance of Nathan and Hieu Waddington, has been going to great lengths to bring back some of the energy that once made it a pillar of Hanoi's drinking scene. Always a classic watering hole in a city with precious few real pubs, they've revamped their operations and are getting the crowds back. One of our distinguished New Hanoian users along with five friends will get a chance to see it all first hand. That's right, six people will be getting a free meal from their menu of hearty pub fare, along with free draft beer...all night. The beer will keep flowing until you are ready to call a halt to the evening...compliments of Nathan and Hieu at the The Spotted Cow. Their generosity will help you fit right in in a place where the regulars seem to have their own private taps running wide open all night as well. Alright all you newcomers, let's see what you've got. It'll take some time, but you may one day challenge some of our site legends on the review pages. If you want a look at what it takes get it done, just glance at some of our most decorated reviewers like cheapie, Dratman, hanoiRob, hanoichick, loominpapa, or Emceemc. Don't worry, you're not directly competing with these masters of the trade. All you need to do is show us that you're one of the most active contributors for this month. Wow us with some insight and humor. Tell us some things about Hanoi we didn't know. Help somebody in a pinch. You'll be on your way. Before we sign off, there's a couple other goings on that everybody should be taking note of. First of all, C.A.M.A. is at it again, ready to have another bash for all of you music loving crazies in Hanoi. This time, they'll be setting things off just across the Chuong Bridge (nearest the Old Quarter) at Nha San Ben Ho. C.A.M.A. brings the Bangkok style to Hanoi once again with a special one-off party on Sat 29 September. One of Thailand's longest running independent bands, Stylish Nonsense have played to plaudits in France and Germany and will be in Hanoi for a one-night only gig. With live drumming and a variety of classic to modern electronic instruments, Stylish Nonsense mesh 8-bit video game soundtracks, breakbeats, analog atmospheres and spectral harmonies to create a sonic reflection of Bangkok's vibrant 21st-century pop culture. Supported by Hanoi's own Digital Offensive act and the CAMA sound system crew, the night promises to be a belter. For more information, visit camageddon.wordpress.com. One week later, on the sixth of October, Humanitarian Services for Children of Vietnam (HSCV) we will be holding an enjoyable event for all the family, including children's activities, competitions and entertainment; the judging of the HSCV Children's Art Competition, food and drink, break dancers, bands and DJs, raffles and more. The event will have a family focus during the day, with bands, food and drink continuing into the evening. They are expecting a good turnout at this year's event by expatriates and local citizens so go, join the fun, and help support a great cause. Things get started at 3pm at the American Club. Don't miss out. Enjoy the rest of your September folks, and we'll be looking for you on the review pages. Cheers, The Staff of the New Hanoian
