July Winners

Another month has come and gone here on the New Hanoian, and so it’s time to announce our latest winners. There were many new arrivals to the site who got their accounts squared way and began contributing, but only one of our newcomers had what it took to find themselves in the winner’s circle. A long time contributor who just made her way back to our fair city distinguished herself, as did the on going contributions of a user who was just recognized last month for his outstanding work. While we typically lean toward rewarding the new faces in our community for adding their voices to our growing collection of perspectives, there are times when we just can’t ignore the fact that a veteran of these pages has simply bettered them. On to the prizes… For his more than two dozen reviews written, we’re happy to announce that schlepperex and three of his friends will be enjoying dinner for four at Piano Bar & Lounge. Their meal will begin downstairs around the large U-shaped bar with a free bottle of wine. When their appetites are sufficiently piqued, they’ll move upstairs to the piano accompanied dining spaces of the second floor. There, each will enjoy a full dinner with another complimentary bottle of wine. Once dinner is complete, it’s off to the rooftop patio for after dinner drinks. With the sounds of Phung Hung street below and open air above, they can reflect on what a night at Piano Bar & Lounge is all about. Our second winner for the month of July has been a member for nearly a near now. However, she just recently returned to Hanoi and began cranking out reviews, comments, and answers to Ask a New Hanoian questions at a noteworthy pace. And noteworthy, in these parts, means free stuff. The always helpful kparsons and three friends will be enjoying a specially prepared lunch for four at Hoa Sua. They will be welcomed with a complimentary bottle of wine (matched to the general menu served that afternoon). Then, the dishes will flow onto the table with various offerings of their full Asian and European menu. All the while, the meal will be prepared and served by the disadvantaged youth Hoa Sua has taken in to ready for careers in Vietnam’s hospitality industry. For you it will be a relaxing afternoon break on their outdoor patio, on the European style first floor, or the Asian themed rooms above…for them, it will be a chance to impress. After completing a round of their renowned desserts, the four lucky attendees will have a 50,000 VND voucher for use in their splendid bakery. Finally, a man who just last month reviewed and commented his way to dinner for four at Khazaana. Not content to have won once, loominpapa kept plugging way and ran right past all but one of the new arrivals. Take note newcomers, here’s what it takes to pull off a monthly prize. For this time around, loominpapa moves from fine dining to pure drinking. Half Man / Half Noodle will be hosting our illustrious two-time winner and up to ten of his friends for an evening of traditional rice wine and whatever else they decide to get themselves into. The center piece of the evening will be a large jug of Ruou Can. This mild and sweet traditional liquor of the Hoa Binh area is a smooth start to any evening. Far different from the medicinal jet fuel that many of the local liquors resemble, Ruou Can is an easy to drink concoction made from fermenting sticky rice and drank from an earthenware pot through bamboo straws. When the Ruou Can is finished, loominpapa will have free draft beer for as long as he can keep himself planted on a bar stool. Any friends he brings along (up to ten), will get 20% off anything they order that night. Given that Half Man / Half Noodle is known frequently to stay open until first light, and it’s new $4 a night dormitory facilities upstairs open now at 6am, who’s to say how long a night might be? There you have it: our three truly deserving winners for the month of July. Those of you who didn’t win anything, don’t fret. Being a New Hanoian member has advantages whether you write your way into a monthly prize, or do nothing at all. So impressed were we with the turnout at the first New Hanoian meet up, we’ve decided that many more are in order. To show our appreciation, we’ve secured a most sought after feature for the next gathering: Free Booze That’s right people, on Sunday August 12th, we will be having another massive meet up of New Hanoians at Dragonfly. Starting at 7:30pm on that evening, ANY New Hanoian member will be drinking for free. Each of Dragonfly’s two upstairs rooms will be reserved for the event. Kegs of beer and jugs, punch bowls and pitchers of a couple different cocktails will be in each room and free for the taking until they run out. Get there early to ensure that there’s plenty left for you and your friends. Forward this newsletter on to any friends who you think might fancy a night of free drinking (are there any who don’t?), and if you’re not yet a member, be sure to sign up. You get a chance to make yourself heard, it’s free, and you get ample opportunities for free stuff. What more do you need? See you there, The staff of the New Hanoian
